Under the radar – 10am GMT October 12

Good morning and welcome to Monday, after a pretty quiet weekend on the Apple news front: today’s highlights led by BSkyB taking a shot at iTunes while the US Army has adopted a video surveillance system – based on Macs.

Read on too for some small Mobile Me improvements, the iPhone’s on its way to the United Arab Emirates, Teens love their iPhones (and don’t really ever buy a Zune – who does?), Sirius brings satellite radio to the iPhone and some analysts think Apple’s trading close to its maximum now (we don’t agree, BTW). Read on…

iPod, Meet the Beatles

Beatles on ipod

This week brought news that John Lennon’s entire discography will now be on iTunes, DRM free at $1.29/track.  This is very likely the latest clue in the next big announcement from Apple.

NYTimes speculates on Apple DRM announcement

Speculating on yesterday’s news from Linkin Park (really? Apple?  Linkin Park?) front man Mike Shinoda on an upcoming special event, the New York Times is speculating that Apple will announce an end to DRM on iTunes.  It certainly makes sense since Apple has spearheaded the charge against DRM laced music (Apple is fine, it appears, with DRM video) and Amazon has been offering DRM free MP3’s from all of the major labels since last year.

Other things on the agenda?  Hopefully those MacBook Pros, the SDK and, of course, the Beatles (ha:P).

Update: Turns out that the rumor isn’t true – just a special show at the SoHo store.

The Beatles? Finally on iTunes? Ugh.

We hope so just so we don’t have to hear about it anymore.  It is rolling into Macworld tomorrow.  From their website:

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a non-profit, mobile recording studio outfitted with traditional musical instruments as well as current technological advances. Since 1998, the Bus has provided free hands-on programs to hundreds of high schools, colleges, Boys and Girls Clubs, music festivals, concerts, conventions and community organizations. Working together with some of the biggest names in music, the Lennon Bus encourages students to play music, write songs, engineer recording sessions and produce music video projects using the latest audio, video, and live sound equipment.

The interior is divided into two separate recording environments. The front studio offers the chance to participate in the creation of multi-media projects. Audio and video components are demonstrated, with visitors assisting in the recording and editing of original material. The back studio is a more traditional set-up for bands and the remote recording of concerts and special events. It features a full range of instruments including guitars, basses, keyboards, and drums. Also on-board is a P.A. system enabling performances on the side of the Bus.

Apple Europe boss – success across Europe, concern at iPod nano sales

Apple’s European chief says the company is an agent of disruptive industry change, confirms the company is seeing colossal growth in Europe – and seems a little anxious about iPod nano sales.

Speaking to the Guardian, Pascal Cagni, Apple’s general manager and vice-president, EMEA, came on strong: “We have right now the best ever product line, we keep saying this, and it’s fuelled by the fact you have got the portable line where we display growth of 35% year-on-year.”

Cagni confirmed that Europe’s education markets are falling for Apple products, with “immense success all over Europe” in back to school sales.

Not just that, but also in market share the Apple star is shining, he confirmed, “We have typically above 20-25% market share in each of the [European] countries.

Cagni talks a little about Apple’s retail strategy – its online store, own-brand retail stores, premium resellers and high street retailers.

Apple Store blips out in US, UK, as pre-keynote anticipation grows

OK folks, we all know the drill.

Apple has shut down its online store in the US and the UK (and now, beyond, we hear) as it prepares to add whatever new products it announces in the next few hours….seems an early close, though, so it may well pop back up again. (Spurious music video after the jump).

Rock 'n' roll surprise: Apple TV to get a browser?

We’ve been told not to expect an Apple TV at today’s Apple event, and speculation has pretty much moved away from the device, now an analyst has re-ignited the discussion, voicing his opinion the Apple TV will gain Web browsing in a software update.

“We believe that Apple TV does not sell because it does not support the fastest growing distribution medium for television content: the Web," wrote Technology Business Research analyst, Ezra Gottheil.
