Apple Sports app updated with daily newsletter and more

Apple’s Sports app has evolved into a powerful way to track your favorite teams and leagues. In a new update this week, the app has added easier access to league standings, a new Sports Newsletter, and more.

Here are the release notes for today’s Apple Sports app update:

  • Two matches, one winner. Follow the Relegation Playoff to find out who keeps their place in the Bundesliga.
  • Standings are now available on league pages. See how your teams stack up at a glance.
  • Goal scorers are now highlighted at the top of every NHL game for faster and easier updates.

While not mentioned in the release notes, Apple is also now advertising a new daily “Apple Sports” newsletter in the app. “The stories fans are talking about – plus, the latest updates on your favorite teams.”

How about some historical scores? I should be able to go back to last week and see what the score was for Game 1 between Knicks and Celtics or even go back to the start of the season. If it was me I would turn the app into a sports almanac and be able to go back to the 1986 season and see what the score was for the Super Bowl that year. Or be able to look up career stats for everyone that has ever played in the NBA. Or be able to see at a glance all time sports records like most rushing yards or most goals scored in a season. All that data is there and relatively easy to find with a google search, but nowhere is it all neatly collated into a single app.

The newsletter is managed through the Apple News app. Tapping on the banner in the Apple Sports app will take you to the News app where you will automatically be signed up for the newsletter and can manage your subscription.

The Apple Sports app is available on the App Store for free. It first launched in February 2024 and has gotten consistent updates since then.
