AirTag 2 gets its first firmware update since January launch

In addition to a firmware update for the new AirPods Max 2, which are set to hit the shelves tomorrow (and we have already reviewed), Apple also rolled out a firmware update to the AirTag 2 earlier today. Here are the details.

Update now available, with no way to manually install it.

Following the release of the AirTag 2 earlier this year, Apple today rolled out the first firmware update for its tracker.

As spotted by MacRumors, firmware version 3.0.45 is rolling out, replacing version 3.0.41, which shipped with the device. Here’s Apple’s official guide to check your firmware version:

  1. Open the Find My app.
  2. Tap the Items tab.
  3. Select your AirTag in the list of items.
  4. Tap the name of your AirTag, and the serial number and firmware version will appear.

As a reminder, Apple currently doesn’t offer a way to install the update manually.

Apple hasn’t yet shared the release notes of the new firmware for AirTag 2. However, given that this is the first update since the launch of the device, it is likely that it fixes bugs the company identified after users started using the tracker in real-world situations, and adds a few performance improvements.

AirTag 2 was launched on January 26, featuring improved range thanks to the company’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, and speakers that are 50 percent louder than those of the device’s first generation.

Apple also said that AirTag 2 features “a suite of industry-first protections against unwanted tracking, including cross-platform alerts and unique Bluetooth identifiers that change frequently.”

AirTag 2 costs $29 for a single device, or $99 for a 4-pack.
