The Studio Display XDR has gotten a rare Apple price drop, if you pick the option without the stand included. The Studio Display XDR launched last month with a starting price of $3299, whether you opted for the model with VESA mount or the model with Apple’s tilt-adjustable stand.
The company has quietly updated the pricing to make the VESA mount option $400 cheaper, so the entry price for the display is now $2899. The Studio Display XDR with stand still starts at $3299.
Clearly, it must cost Apple significantly less to manufacture the VESA mount option than the model with included stand, so it was arguably a bit weird this wasn’t reflected in the price difference before now.
Regardless of the reason, a ~12% price drop less than a month after launch is incredibly rare occurrence for any Apple product.
Alongside the pricing strategy change, Apple has also tweaked the purchasing flow on Apple.com to make the new default price tiers for the Studio Display XDR more evident.
Previously, the first step of the buy flow presented the user with a choice of glass texture, either standard or nano-texture.
With this pricing update, the glass choice has been moved to the second step. Now, the first step is the choice of stand option, either the $3299 stand option or the $2899 VESA mount adapter option. This ensure the lowest entry-price configuration is shown immediately.
If you are in the market for Apple’s highest-end monitor but you already have a VESA-compatible stand already on your desk that you’d like to use, you can now save yourself $400.
Unfortunately, the cheaper non-XDR Studio Display has not been extended the same courtesy. Whether you pick the Studio Display stand or VESA mount option, they are both still offered at the same $1599 price. On the base Studio Display, you only get a tilt-adjustable stand as standard. The height-adjustable version remains a $400 upgrade.
