Apple announces tvOS 27 with smart downloads, new Podcasts app, more

Apple today announced tvOS 27, the next major software version for Apple TV, as part of the WWDC keynote which included a bevy of platform-wide improvements.

One major new feature for tvOS this year is an updated Podcasts app, as well as a new smart downloads feature, performance enhancements including faster app launch and Control Center loading, larger text size options for accessibility, and more.

Unfortunately, Apple has not yet launched a tvOS 27 preview page, like it has done for its other operating systems. This means there are few details (and nary a screenshot) of what these features entail currently. They were only mentioned in a split-screen feature word cloud frame during the keynote.

We’ll follow up with more information in the future, but for now what we now is coming to Apple TV is:

  • Redesigned Podcasts app
  • Smart downloads on Apple TV
  • AppleCare coverage details in tvOS Settings
  • Faster AirPlay connections to Apple TV and HomePod
  • More responsive Control Center, and smoother app launch animations
  • Larger text size accessibility options

tvOS 27 will be in developer beta starting today, with a public beta in July, and a public release this fall (probably in September).
