Sensor Tower: Meta’s Muse app tops 10 million US downloads in 40 days

According to a new report from Sensor Tower, not only did Meta’s Muse become the 12th app ever to reach 10 million US downloads in 40 days, but it is also outpacing its peers in user retention. Here are the details.

Meta Muse keeps growing amid privacy controversy

A few weeks ago, Sensor Tower reported that Meta’s Muse app had surpassed 5 million downloads in the US, thanks to a mix of popularity and Meta’s massive ad push.

At the time, the app had spent 12 consecutive days at the top of the US App Store. Muse has since slipped to second place, but Sensor Tower now reports that it has become just the 12th app to reach 10 million US downloads within 40 days of launch, since the firm began tracking apps in October 2015.

For comparison, Sensor Tower says ChatGPT, Grok, and Claude reached just 3.7 million, 500,000, and 200,000 US downloads, respectively, during their first 40 days.

Per Sensor Tower data, ChatGPT scaled to ~15mn global downloads in its first 40 days post app-launch, as its global reach expedited its growth. ChatGPT’s top regions by downloads during the studied period included the US, Japan, Brazil, and Germany, which accounted for 25%, 9%, 6%, and 5% of the global downloads, respectively.

The report also noted that ChatGPT’s US downloads have declined 25% over the past 30 days compared to the previous 30-day period. ChatGPT is currently the fourth most downloaded free app on the US App Store, while Claude ranks seventh and Grok 34th.

As for the other apps that reached the 10 million milestone within 40 days, Sensor Tower didn’t name them all, but noted that nine were mobile games. The most recent app to achieve the feat was Meta’s own Threads, back in July 2023.

Today’s report comes amid fresh privacy concerns surrounding Muse, after security researchers discovered that shared conversations could expose sensitive personal and business information. Meta has since suspended the sharing feature while it investigates the issue.

Despite the privacy concerns, Sensor Tower’s data suggests that Muse is doing a better job of retaining users than its AI competitors, which is not surprising, since this is one of Meta’s strongest suits:

US Muse users are returning to the app, which is averaging a 30% retention rate after 7 days, and a 23% retention rate after 14 days. Meta is currently outpacing AI competitors in its retention at the 7 and 14 day mark, as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok averaged a 19% and 16% retention rate, respectively.

Finally, Sensor Tower notes that Meta continues spending heavily to promote its AI assistant. According to the report, the app accounted for 39% of Meta’s advertising spend in the US so far this month, up from 23% in September. Muse also reportedly climbed from 73rd to 21st place among US brands ranked by advertising impressions.
