Apple releases iOS 8.0.2 to address cellular and Touch ID issues in previous update

Apple has finally released iOS 8.0.2 to address the issues discovered in yesterday’s 8.0.2 update on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The new release includes all of the HealthKit and keyboard fixes, among others, as well as the ability to actually make phone calls and connect to a cellular data network.

Apple said yesterday that the update was coming “in a few days” and instructed users to downgrade to version 8.0 while awaiting the fix. The new update is rolling out now and can be found in the over-the-air software updater built into iOS.

Apple told CNBC that “less than 40,000 devices” were affected by the buggy release. The change log is below:

  • Fixes an issue in iOS 8.0.1 that impacted cellular network connectivity and Touch ID on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  • Fixes a bug so HealthKit apps can now be made available on the App Store
  • Addresses an issue where 3rd party keyboards could become deselected when a user enters their passcode
  • Fixes an issue that prevented some apps from accessing photos from the Photo Library
  • Improves the reliability of the Reachability feature on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
  • Fixes an issue that could cause unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages
  • Better support of Ask To Buy for Family Sharing for In-App Purchases

  1. you first.

  2. That was quick… Lets hope it works… Haha

    • password92 - 10 years ago

iPhone 6 Verizon. Lost all wifi immediately got a pop-up “Could not scan we suck.. blah blah”. Luckily a quick restart of my phone fixed everything.

  3. PMZanetti - 10 years ago

    Ok…i guess I’ll be first ☺

  4. Liam Deckham - 10 years ago

Nevermind. Just applied the update. Cell service is gone again!

    • Liam Deckham - 10 years ago

Ok wait… it just came back after 5-minutes. This is nuts!

      • Liam Deckham - 10 years ago

In my case, there was a 5-minute delay after the update in cell service coming back, but it did come back.

      • aeronperyton - 10 years ago

I believe the update deliberately shuts down and reboots all the antennas and services. That would explain the delay.

  5. MGhostSoft - 10 years ago

    I’ll wait until tomorrow.

  6. Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

I’m going after the IPSW files, as I want to do a complete restore on my 5S and start clean this time around, no more messin’ around!

    • irelandjnr - 10 years ago

Just do a complete restore from iTunes.

      • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Ended up doing the IPSW restore from home last night, and am now running on a clean 8.0.2 install, and all is well so far. This version definitely feels snappier on my 5S than the original 8 release, so I’m happy!

  7. ashtraywasp - 10 years ago

If there’s one update not to be worried about, it’s this one.

Still, no fucking way. I’m waiting till tomorrow.

  8. vijhav - 10 years ago

I installed it and its working fine on my 6

  9. Mac McIntire - 10 years ago

    Mine worked

  10. Kye Maloy (@KyeMaloy) - 10 years ago

After updating i seem to have lost all my documents in the cloud, everything from pages numbers and keynote is gone…

    • coreylarue - 10 years ago

I was able to update and my docs inside the apps seem fine-did you update from ios7 and enable the iCloud drive? If so, you may want to check from the actual iCloud website-you may be able to get to them from Safari

  11. Scott Benfield - 10 years ago

Feels alot smoother. Settings doesnt crash every other opening. Touch ID less glictchy. I like it. Well see how it holds over the next week!

  12. Brandon Powell - 10 years ago

I’ll stay with iOS 7, thanks. The initial update of iOS 8 was too buggy for me and apps were freezing and being extremely slow. I’ll stick with iOS 7, for now.

  13. Craig Patchett - 10 years ago

Sent my iPhone 5 into restore mode.

    • Scott Blake - 10 years ago

Mine, too! Went back to ios8. Seriously upset.

    • MGhostSoft - 10 years ago

It happened to my iPhone 5 when I was upgrading from iOS 7 to iOS 8.

    • Craig Patchett - 10 years ago

I got my iCloud backup to restore but then it died about 25% of the way into restoring the apps. The apps are arranged correctly in their pages and folders, thank God, but they’re all stuck in the “Waiting” state. Tapping on them restarts the download, but with hundreds of apps this whole process has turned into a major pain.

  14. I just updated and it bent my phone!!

  15. Jeff Colvin (@jeffcolv) - 10 years ago

Attempting now – Will post update after (iPhone 5s, 16GB – GSM)

  16. cheapghostwriter - 10 years ago

Im waiting too. I am too dependent on my devices to take a chance on this. What else did they break?

  17. boardflyer (@boardflyer) - 10 years ago

Normally, I apply updates ASAP, but I think given Apple’s recent history, I am going to wait a week on this one.

  18. Winski - 10 years ago

    We’ll see…

    • Winski - 10 years ago

The ‘fixed’ update for 8.0.2 IS CRAP!!!! Applications like Safari don’t work., HealthKit won’t even start… Is there anyone in charge of software release on the job ????

      • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

I have no issues with any apps in 8.0.2, particularly the ones you mentioned, after updating. You should perform a Reset All Settings under Settings -> General -> Reset, that should eliminate the problem.

  19. the problem of wifi sync with iTunes has been resolved? My iPhone and iPad have not appeared on my iTunes.. after iOS8 updated..

  20. jauntee - 10 years ago

All is working fine on my iPhone 6, and I did not agree with the author’s first line that apple had finally posted a fix. Being a world wide corporation and getting a stable update in less than 24 hours is great in my book.

    • Dean Har - 10 years ago

Lack of cellular is a big freakin deal… A speedy response was fully expected.

  21. むっひ (@muhhy_hyynw) - 10 years ago

How am I to install iOS 8.0.2 when 8.0.1 is already in the settings app ready to install? Installing via iTunes only solution?

    • Mike Beasley - 10 years ago

You can delete 8.0.1 by going into Settings > Usage > Manage Storage and then finding “iOS 8.0.1” in the list, tapping it, and hitting delete. Neat little trick I didn’t know about until this whole thing happened either.

  22. Landy (@Soydepr) - 10 years ago

    2gb update smh

  23. Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Well, just finished applying 8.0.2 to my 5S via OTA (ipsw was taking too long to download), the red number 1 on the Settigs icon refuses to go away now, wonderful…

When is Apple going to fire that QA guy responsible for this?!

    • bsholbrook - 10 years ago

Works fine with iPhone 6 plus on AT&T

    • Landy (@Soydepr) - 10 years ago

you should never do a 2gb update via OTA

      • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Actually, as I already had 8.0.1 on my 5S, the OTA was only showing under 20MB to update; 2GB only for the IPSW complete image of iOS 8.0.2 via iTunes.

    • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Just to further comment on the red 1 on Settings, I managed to get rid of it by resetting my phone and reverting it to an iCloud backup I had made prior to going with 8.0.1, and now everything is OK again, happy camper :)

  24. airmanchairman - 10 years ago

I’m up and running in the UK… iPhone 5 and iPad 3 though… Less than 25 minutes all in all, so far so cool.

  25. eddyblogs - 10 years ago

Just updated my iPhone 5s ATT OTA from 8.0 too 8.0.2 and everything is working great :) it’s a little faster then it was before. Thank you apple!

  26. Wil Turner IV (@onewil) - 10 years ago

Broke my cell service and touch ID. Stupid, shouldn’t have updated.

  27. taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

LTE AND wifi speeds are still dead slow on my 6 plus.

Apple needs to give the testing team more time with new phones prior to release to test and see how the new versions of iOS work on them.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Oh yeah? Ya think so? You tell them!

      • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

At least 40,000 unusable iphone 6’s say so.

    • scumbolt2014 - 10 years ago

My iPhone 6 screems on wifi and LTE. Either you got a peice of shit, or you just are.

      • taoprophet420 - 10 years ago

Both might be true)) most of the time I’m getting .8 down on LTE, the fastest I have seen was 2.8 after a network settings reset. My wifi is usually 6:2 and has been 1.2 to 2.2.

  28. Attila Tamás Zimler - 10 years ago

That’s a great update. Except that is does not go onto my phone with the over the air method. It is downloaded and then it says checking update, then there is no update for your device. Well, well, well. Somebody should be really fired.

  29. Verizon - 10 years ago

I’m scared to try it after yesterday’s 8 hour ordeal thanks to 8.0.1 !!

    Regards, Roy

    >

  30. PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Grow up ya whiners. I didn’t hesitate for a second applying this update to my 6 Plus.

    • Dean Har - 10 years ago

Can you tell us if the update fixes the front pocket bending issue?

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Can’t fix an issue that doesn’t exist. I walked around all day with my 6+ my pocket… My front pocket… While wearing jeans… I even sat down! Gasp! Guess what? It’s not bent. :o

      • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

God, just STFU already with all the bend BS!!! This only happens if you want to attempt breaking your thumbs while applying violent levels of pressure to the device! I’m so sick of this made-up FUD “gate” saga I feel like punching out the guy that made that 18-hours-in-my-pants comment on MacRumors, and then the guy that did that pathetic “bend” test! Fucking idiots all of them, and those perpetuating this crap aren’t much brighter!

  31. jbaustian - 10 years ago

8.0 is still working fine, so in no hurry to update to 8.0.2. But if you are still using iOS 7, then I guess you can’t get 8.0 (8.0.0?).

  32. quagski - 10 years ago

Updated on iPhone 6 (Verizon), no problems at all.

  33. Cameron Scott - 10 years ago

Installed. Unfortunately my phone is still bent. =(

It’s a great time to be a Samsung owner.

    • standardpull - 10 years ago

It is never good to be a Samsung owner. Samsung’s devices are the bottom of the bottom in terms of quality and function. I’ve owned Samsung before, and I have swore I’d never buy from them again. Yes, I admit to my personal mistakes.

I have exactly one remaining Samsung product now and it drives me nuts with its awful, unreliable software. As soon as its ink is exhausted or as soon as it suffers an unrecoverable internal fault (which is more likely), it is going in the trash heap.

Again, this opinion is exclusively due to my personal experience with Samsung products. Some may disagree due to their own personal experience, and I’m fine with that.

    • 89p13 - 10 years ago

Says the Greatest Samesung Troll in the world!

      Post over there

    • jrox16 - 10 years ago

Thanks for letting us know. Why are you here anyway? Go play with your Samsung, enjoy it, be productive with it and stop wasting your life.

    • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

Was wondering when your sorry ass would crawl back in here to perpetuate Scamsung! GTFO!

    • scumbolt2014 - 10 years ago

It’s always a good time for you to suck a Samsung boner you worthless troll.

  35. Mr. Duval (@mista_duval) - 10 years ago

8.0.2 bricked my phone. Same issue as before, now touch ID and no cell service.

  36. aeronperyton - 10 years ago

Japanese 5S, applied 8.0.2 onto 8.0.1. Zero issues, cellular and TouchID working the moment the phone rebooted.

And good for them for fixing the default keyboard for passcodes issue.

    • jrox16 - 10 years ago

I personally like the idea of the system always switching to the default iOS keyboard for passcodes. I want there to be a setting to force this because I don’t trust 3rd party keyboards completely, no matter what they say, even on sandboxed secure curated iOS.

      • aeronperyton - 10 years ago

That’s why there’s a scary warning when activating 3rd party keyboards. It’s your call.

  37. meisvan (@fanyibing) - 10 years ago

and it made my iphone5 to recovery model

  38. Rob Howard (@warpedgeoid) - 10 years ago

Verizon iPhone 6 Plus, no issues here. I upgraded from 8.0.0 to 8.0.2, skipping 8.0.1.

  39. Alex Motz - 10 years ago

Under promise over deliver… Doesn’t surprise me that they were able to get this done in 24 hours.

    • jrox16 - 10 years ago

Yup, Apple is the best. Software will always have bugs, but no other company will respond this quickly to fix them. Samsung? LOL, good luck. Google? LMAO, they didn’t fix a bug for a year which was rendering Nexus 7s unusable to do memory problems. You can Google for that, original Nexus 7s turning into doorstops after some months of us.

      • Ingus Fridmanis - 10 years ago

This is not bug, but a hole in the software. How can you release an update that makes your “PHONE” unusable? This not the first time they release phones with no cellular service.

But it doesn’t matter for most iPhone users if you can’t call, it’s about having it.

      • scumbolt2014 - 10 years ago

A post that makes sense and is real. Where the hell did that come from on here?

  40. Nina (@hughsbeautiful) - 10 years ago

After installing iOS 8 on my iPad mini Retina, the screen doesn’t rotate :S Wonder if this new update will mend that too? Anyone else with the rotate problem?

  41. Installation put my iPhone 5 into Recovery Mode, WTF?!

    • ryan96n - 10 years ago

It put my 5s into recovery mode as well, except when i try to restore via iTunes on my Mac it keeps saying there is an issue with the network, stops downloading, and the process repeats.endlessly..

  42. j0hnf23 - 10 years ago

so… where are the healthkit apps?

    • Attila Tamás Zimler - 10 years ago

That’s something I’m interested in too. HealthKit was a major feature that I was looking forward to, as help to improve, well you guessed, my health :D. (Better picture helps you find out were to improve.)

    • Edison Wrzosek - 10 years ago

As per another article here on 9to5Mac, the HealthKit apps are now making their way onto the App Store, looks like things are rockin’ away now!

  45. 89p13 - 10 years ago

    iPhone 5s – 64 GB – AT&T service but factory unlocked

Downloaded update 8.0.2 OTA and it installed without a burp. It took about 20 minutes total from start of download to being able to text and call and everything works fine.

Texting and sending over iMessage seems much speedier than 30 minutes ago.

YMMV – but it worked for me. :tu:

  46. Has anyone had any problems with the spotlight search? Mine really hasn’t worked right since 8.0. In 8.0, many times doing a spotlight search showed no results. With 8.02, it works better but it no longer spotlight searches Apps, which is something I used frequently

  47. I wish I did not upgrade my 5s, Wow.. the battery is draining like crazy.. on a less than 5min call 7% of the battery has gone..

    • 89p13 - 10 years ago

And yet on my 5S – I’m still sitting at 99% battery after almost 2 hours.

I did shut everything down after the restart and restart it again.

And texting is so much faster – it seems like the keyboard entry is flying.

      YMMV.

    • jrox16 - 10 years ago

Make sure to reboot your phone, do a hard reset (hold power and home button together until screen goes blank and Apple logo comes back up, then you can let the buttons go. Remember, very often with new software updates, the phone will be doing a lot of work in the background for some time, re-indexing files and such. It’ll get warm and the battery will drain fast. Give it a day, don’t panic. If after a day and reboot like I explained above, it’s still happening, contact Apple. All my iPhones would get warm and the battery would drain like crazy for hours after software updates, and the next day they would be just fine and run better than before.

    • Thanks guys for the rescue I did a hard reset and fully charged my iPhone and it seems now my phone is working normally the update indeed did not affect the battery :) the phone did not heat much as it did after the update

  48. victoreanu2014 - 10 years ago

    Iphone 4S. Works fine!

  49. darkhorizen51 - 10 years ago

Has anyone updated an iphone 4S with this new update? If so, has it helped? I have heard enough problems with 8.0 that I will not update mine just yet.

    • aeronperyton - 10 years ago

The “problems” with iOS 8 were limited to a percentage of iPhone 6es, and they are now fixed. 4Ses run iOS 8 just fine but like all new OSes on older phones there a performance hit.

iOS 8.0 does better on the 4S than iOS 7.0 did on the 4, but it is still noticeably slower. If you have a 4S that’s still on iOS 7, and you’re not waiting for any of the new features on 8, wait for 8.1. That’ll likely be the last real effort made to make iOS 8 run better with less memory.

      • kimberlysmeyer - 10 years ago

My 4S suffered a HORRIBLE performance hit when I upgraded to 8.0. Apps crashing left and right (I’m guessing due to memory shortages). Wondering whether 8.0.2 might help or if I should just wait for 8.1 (or my new 6)…

      • aeronperyton - 10 years ago

You’re an odd case then, because now I’m finding out that a 4S restored to 8.0.2 has almost no lag when compared to the latest version of iOS 7.

My suggestion to you is to make a full backup to your computer over USB (be sure to encrypt the backup so that iTunes will catch all your login passwords as well), then do a complete restore on the 4S to 8.0.2, then restore your freshly minted backup back to the phone.

  50. Winski - 10 years ago

At about 3:00 am this morning west coast time, i decided that i’d give updating to 8.0.2 on my newly-minted iPhone 6 …. I thought to myself, naa, Apple for sure had fixed the 8.0.1 issues, pushed a spanking new 8.0.2 update ready to keep that gleaming $800 heap of micro-miracles all spick-and-span and ready for action…. Plug into iTunes…haul-ass…

Hummmmm..re-boot, start mail….poof! Gone… Start Safari……Poof! Gone… Oh crap, call the Apple help guys… Poof! No keyboard… AND when they tried to call me back, no ringie-dingie…. Phone, in-bound, gone…. Finally after getting in touch with the help desk thru chat, and being asked to wait a couple of minutes, i was asked to hard start, delete all, cold re-boot the iPhone and restore from a backup…. Complete restart…

If i hadn’t backed up my phone right before starting the update, i would still be sitting here with an $800 brick… Hold off 24 hours if you can to let he update settle down

    New info on 8.0.2

Just swapped out my defective iPhone 6 at the Apple Store. At first they said I had to wait 3 hrs for my spot but then they were very prompt after seeing my phone to help me swap it out.

New issue: my back up was on 8.0.2 and the new phone on 8.0 would not restore the back up. It kept saying it was corrupt.

Fix: set up as a new phone, update to 8.0.2, erase all data and content, restore from back up.

After updating the new device to 8.0.2 the restore worked just fine.

  55. Michelle Jane Wong - 10 years ago

wtf my after updating my iPad mini, it went in to recovery mode.
need to plug in to tube now. useless apple

  56. Berleotte Gamboa Avalos - 10 years ago

I can tell if it is recommended to use the updated io8.0.2, is I have a iphone 5 with io8.0.1 update and had no problems, but I’m afraid that this new fail. Please! Thank you.

  57. Stephen Norton - 10 years ago

iOS 8.02 still leaves various thing broken. Especially concerning is that it has broken wifi connections to corporate wifi networks. Any corporate wifi network that uses a web page for credentials just brings up a popup that says the certificate can’t be trusted and even if you attempt to “trust” it, you are brought back to the wifi choice screen where you have to rechoose a network and you are in an endless loop. Iphone and iPad both on IOS 8.02 both react the same.

  58. Well I don’t know about Touch ID thing because I have Verizon iPhone 5. It has been the worst experience. I have been using iPhones since the day one. It has been always very dependable phone. It often times freeze up, not responsive or very slow responsive to open an app (even Settings). I had to restart by pressing home+power buttons 4 or 5 times a day to get the phone back in operation. I thought 8.0.2 would be better but same. Yes, I did clean up and all the stuff. I probably upgrade the phone but it should work with iPhone 5 as good as new phones. Hope 8.0.3 would come soon to fix my problem.

  59. Doug Smith (@dcsmitty23) - 10 years ago

After the update my phone seems very confused about passwords to all my email accounts. It keeps asking me to update my password, but when I type it into the popup window it doesn’t recognize it. I’ve found that it works if I go into Settings and update it, but what a pain.

  60. Soomin Joo - 10 years ago

i updated my iphone 6 to ios 8.0.2 but my wifi is still slow and my cellular data does not work at all. help me?

Help me please, I upgraded my unlocked 5s Verizon CDMA and GSM to iOS 8.0.2 but it was unlocked and I lost CDMA network the NO Service appeared I do not know what should I do fuck iphone mobiles apple put update and then they unlocked CDMA network

  62. Margarita Lowther - 10 years ago

I’ve downloaded the iso8 / 2 version on my I pad, my screen keeps freezing, & when I download stuff instead of downloading seamlessly it appears to download in chunks (hey not a computer whizz kid-or even a whizz anything! so no idea of the correct terminology ) but it’s seriously irritating as have this pause whilst you wonder if it’s going to load the rest of page or choose to freeze any ideas how to cure this?

  63. Ralph Rothschild - 10 years ago

My iPhone will not let my cellular network service retrieve my Verizon email messages. WiFi works okay. All cellular network settings are correct

  64. Robyn Drothler - 10 years ago

I continue to have an invisible keyboard even after upgrading from iphone 5 to 6+… sometimes it magically re-appears but it goes away and then comes back for no reason – i’m totally up to date on software – I want to know how to get it back – deleting swift key (which I think may be the issue) and rebooting the phone doesn’t help.

  65. Erica Himes - 10 years ago

I installed it on my 5c, because I had no cellular service and thought it would fix it, and it sent my freaking phone into recovery mode. Now I’m stuck waiting for 5 hours for my phone to restore and delete EVERYTHING. I’m seriously thinking about switching to Android after this one. Really pi**sed me off this time.

  66. Ken Carroll - 10 years ago

My IOS7 allows me to upload images to my database, but devices that use IOS8.0.2 do NOT…Doesn’t pay to “upgrade” I guess! My App was made with Alpha Anywhere 3.0 and works from a windows browser and from older IOS7 devices, but WHOSE IDEA WAS IT TO INVENT AN IOS8? I’m such a sucker, having assumed that it would be “BETTER” than IOS7…

  67. Bob Lee - 10 years ago

since upgrading to 8 and even thougth i appied the two patches my phone still heats up with reduced battery life by half and my cellualr data usage skyrocketed from 4 gigabytes per month to over 14. I have cellular data turned off sometimes and it still heats up. I have had a stable phone for over one year until i upgraded to 8.

  68. Gerry Anderson - 10 years ago

My 4S sometimes looses the regular (not speaker phone) speaker and mic when I try to change ringtones.

I have to reset, open/close “settings” a few times to get it to work again. Speakerphone works fine

  69. Dee Ann Davis - 10 years ago

I have an iphone 5 and 5s and now since I downloaded the new software iOS 8.0.2, my phone drops calls, I have no service in areas where I always had great service and my internet is on Extended most of the time now. this upgrade is horrible, I am so frustrated … thinking about changing phones.
