In iOS 10, Photos adds Map view, automatic face recognition and object recognition

Apple will add advanced face and object recognition in iOS 10 Photos, as well as a Map view. Apple will relate together people, locations and other information to bring collections of photos without any user interventions — things like highlight reels, trips and more albums.

Apple presents these smart collection as ‘Memories’. Apple finds the most relevant photos in a collection into a summary. This includes what people are in the photo, the location of these images as well as related images to keep browsing through your library.

The iPhone will automatically create video slideshows of memories for beautiful reflections and reviews of your favourite family moments. The Photos app does local computer vision to work out these various elements. Users can customise these movie files into shorter or longer summaries as well as apply a variety of stock themes.
