iOS devices refer to any of Apple’s hardware that runs the iOS mobile operating system which include iPhones, iPads, and iPods. Historically, Apple releases a new iOS version once a year, the current version is iOS 10. Here is the complete list of iOS 10 compatible devices.
Pictures don’t quite do the iPad 2 justice — it feels really, really great in your hands. Not only does the construction give it a feeling of heft and permanence, but the thin profile combined with the new, tapered edges make holding the device a real joy
-Bezel is slightly thinner
-Has 512 MB of RAM, 1 GHz A5 clocked at 800 MHz
-Clearer speaker
The sound seems clearer if somewhat quieter than the old version, and we can’t say that there’s a major improvement as far as the placement goes.
-Battery life is slightly better than original iPad’s.
Following the release of iOS 4.3 Apple has updated their popular iAd Producer application, which allows anyone to create iAds with little or no programming knowledge. iAd Producer has been updated to version 1.1 and here are the release notes:
Support for full screen banners in ads that target an iPad running iOS 4.3
Creation of ads with multiple banners
Improved compatibility between iAd Producer project files and version management systems
Support for importing and editing JavaScript (JS) and CSS files
Sample projects and plug-ins that demonstrate iAd Producer and iAd JS capabilities
iAd JS is updated to version 1.3.1 and includes numerous bug fixes and enhancements, including the following:
TransitionController now provides notifications that the view will disappear when the visible view controller is changed, rather than when the animation starts
In addition, Apple has updated their iPhone Configuration Utility software for improved compatibility with iOS 4.3 devices. This utility is meant for enterprise users and allows companies to do things like encrypting and provisions devices. Both Mac and Windows downloads are available.
Apple has posted video guided tours for the iPad 2 Garageband, iMovie, and iBooks applications. The walkthroughs range from about 2-6 minutes, depending on the video, and showcase how the applications work on Apple’s iPad 2.
Both the white and black iPad 2s make appearances and the videos are pretty enjoyable to watch. iBooks is already available on the App Store and iMovie and Garageband for iPad will be available for $4.99 on March 11th.
iBooks and Garageband work on the first iPad but iMovie is exclusive to iPad 2 . You can view them all here.
In addition to all of the multi-touch iOS devices, our little AppleTV peripheral got a nice little update of its own today, including the addition of MLB.TV, and NBA League Pass integration. AppleTV says it is 4.2 but in the Apple download direct links, it says 4.3. Whatever. Sports!
According to Stuff Middle East, Apple is the final stages of opening an Apple Store in cash-drenched Dubai. The Store – whether it is officially an ‘Apple Store’ or not, the distinction is dubious– will be a store within a store of Richard Branson’s Virgin Megastore. It will be staffed by Apple geniuses/employees, however and will retain the Apple Store “look and feel”.
The store, in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates, will be 100 per cent Apple, we’re told, complete with Apple staff and know-it-all Geniuses. It’s a real boon for Apple-lovers in the UAE, who in the past have had to deal with extra-long waits for Cupertino’s latest toys or suffer the hugely-inflated prices on the grey market. Bad news for other manufacturers though, who have no doubt capitalized on Apple’s lackluster presence in the region.
It is time to get your iOS 4.3 download on. With a bevy of new features, bugfixes and sweet, sweet Safari speed improvements, you pretty much can’t lose…unless you have a VZ iPhone or iPhone 3G that is. Here are all of your current iOS device downloads.
According to Concord Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo the elusive white iPhone 4 is going into production this month, March, for an April 2011 release. The white iPhone 4 was originally scheduled to launch alongside the black iPhone 4 in June 2010 but was delayed due to white paint issues.
This white iPhone 4 is said to be the GSM version (AT&T and other global carriers) and there is no release time frame for the CDMA (Verizon) version. Apple has been said to have worked on a white CDMA iPhone so that device is not totally out of the question.
We were first to report that Apple confirmed the white iPhone 4 for a Spring launch and this April timeframe fits that perfectly. Ming-Chi Kuo has been fairly accurate lately pinpointing correct iPad 2 camera details, the 1024 x 768 display resolution, but pinpointed incorrect processor information.
This April launch date also seems strange as Apple is expected to launch an all new iPhone – “iPhone 5 – in June or July.
There has been some outrage in the Android community this week about how their ‘4G’ phones can’t upload data as fast as a 3G iPhone 4. (welcome to AT&T Android!). Even the ‘King of Android Phones’, the Atrix, gets schooled by the iPhone. Word on the street is that AT&T hasn’t enabled the higher speed HSDPA+ radios on the Androids but since Apple controls the iPhone firmware, AT&T can’t mess with it. That sounds like the AT&T we know and love.
Pioneer announced their first AirPlay compatible receiver, the VXS-1021 today. It does what you probably think it does – it let’s you stream music from your iOS device to the receiver as if it were an Airport Express.
Here’s where it gets interesting though. The Pioneer will put the album art and music information on your screen (Via HDMI out?). If they can do that, why can’t you stream video to this bad boy?
The VSX-1021 also offers other connectivity choices:
Bluetooth Ready with Pioneer AirJam App
Home Network DLNA 1.5 Certified and Internet Radio with vTuner
Following a preview in 2010, Adobe has finally released a pre-release version of their ‘Wallaby’ Flash-to-HTML5 file conversion software. The software is easy for developers to use and allows developers to drag and drop their Flash content into an Adobe Air application that will then convert it to HTML5 code.
The new code can then be completely edited in programs like Adobe Dreamweaver or manually by hand in text editing software. This new application from Adobe is a huge deal and developers can now easily convert their Flash websites and web applications for use on non-Flash devices like the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
It is important to remember that Adobe makes its money on selling developer tools and not on selling Flash plug-ins.
Apple’s new dual-core, 1GHz A5 chip will be making it’s debut in the iPad 2 in just a few days, and, as advertised in the keynote by Steve Jobs, the new chip will handle 1080p content with ease. The new iPad outputs HD display via an HDMI adapter and cable. So will another Apple device.
The current Apple TV runs Apple’s soon-to-be outdated A4 chip, which only handles 720p content, one of the device’s only weaknesses. When the Apple TV undergoes an update later this year, most likely in September, we’ll most likely see it pack Apple’s new A5 chip, which will handle 1080p video with ease.
It will be interesting to see if AirPlay can handle 1080P as well. Expand Expanding Close
Since the iPad 2’s launch on March 2nd many have wondered whether or not the 3G GSM model would be unlocked and many have also wondered where the SIM card slot is.
Due to the iPad 2’s very thin design many have figured it would be difficult for Apple to actually place the SIM card slot on the device’s side. According to people familiar with the iPad 2 the SIM card slot is on the top-left of the device.
The interesting part about this news is that early iPad 2 cases featured a “mystery port” on the left side of the device. This also shows why some cases had this port and others did not.
Additionally, the GSM version of the iPad 2 will be unlocked in most markets. No word on which markets will have unlocked versions, but we will most likely know the answer to that for the U.S. on March 11th and internationally in late March.
M.I.C. Gadget points to some apparent iPhone 4 prototypes on the chinese “grey market” with 64 GB storage capacities. The images could technically be easily faked but the “XX” on the back of the device’s do help represent the units as potential Apple prototypes.
This suspicious 64GB model has started selling in Sin Tak, the greatest grey market in Hong Kong, and the sellers claimed that these are engineered models and available in small quantity. Interestingly, the back of the phone states iPhone XXGB! That reminds us the leaked prototype last year, the one Gizmodo bought it. It also states the Model no. as XXXXX, and the FCC ID as BCG-XXXXXX. On the screen, you can see is indeed a 64GB capacity and the model is 995-6049LL. And the phone is not locked!
If real and not hacked, this 64 GB iPhone 4 most likely represents a storage capacity that Apple decided to abandon for their 4th generation iPhone rather than an upcoming model. On the other hand, Apple released an out of the ordinary 16 GB original iPhone in February 2008 after the initial June 2007 4 GB and 8GB iPhone launches.
GadgetsDNA (via MacRumors) reports that a radical new design is in the works for iPhone 5 which is somewhat inspired by the iPod touch. Machine translated:
According to a Chinese source, Apple is changing the rear part of iPhone 5 to aluminum which was used for first iPhone’s instead of glass or might adopt the design similar to iPod touch 4G, after facing lots of issues with white paint and scratches on rear glass surface, reported Taiwan’s Economic Daily News.
Decision to design iPhone 5 similar to iPod touch instead of using glass was arrived after receiving number of complaints. Apple seems to stop damages from scratching, issues after painting it white (for white iPhone 5), weight of glass and want to make it more durable instead.
Antenna will be designed just behind Apple Logo so that cellular and Wi-Fi signal can penetrate easily. Side exposed steel antennas seem to be abandoned, as designed in iPhone 4.
We’re a bit skeptical of this report. While Wifi and GPS antennas could shoot out the Apple logo in the back, such a design wouldn’t be great for 3G reception, something that is a high priority for Apple.
For some reason, Best Buy is only listing Black iPads and 3G iPads on AT&T on their site currently. Hopefully this isn’t indicative of their opening day sales lineup and a symptom of not having got around to creating new part numbers yet.
At the same time, they are matching Apple’s iPad 1 price reductions:
Now that the iPad 2 has been announced, following several rumors and predictions, we thought it would be a great idea to compile a prediction roundup into three categories: what came true, what could still be coming up, and what didn’t happen.
We don’t normally put a lot of faith in what the online sales reps say, but MacAppsDaily chatted up an Apple phone rep who said online sales would begin at 12:01 on the 11th, with free fast shipping. That seems pretty solid and is being reported elsewhere. While good, it isn’tt going to get you an iPad as fast as waiting in line though.
One thing this would guarantee though: FedEx isn’t going to accidentally send you your iPad before people get in them in line, like the last few launches.
Update: for clarification 12:01 am is on the 11th. 61 seconds before is the 10th. Midnight used for understanding/clarification.
Update 2: Just recieved this:
Spoke with an Apple store chat representative: Confirmed online sales begin at 12:01am PST on 3/11/2011. Additionally, the in-store pick up reservations will not be allowed initially, according to the chat rep.
One of the benefits of getting rid of an Autocratic ruler/government appears to be the use of FaceTime on your iPhone. SaudiMac reports that Vodafone Egypt is now enabling FaceTime via carrier update.
We still don’t get why carriers get to decide if you have a Wifi-only communications application.
A Reuters report out of China mentiond that Apple had been speaking with the local carriers about connecting their local brand of LTE with the iPhone.
China Mobile Ltd, the world’s largest mobile carrier by subscribers, said on Friday that Apple Inc Chief Executive Steve Jobs has expressed interest in developing an iPhone based on the Chinese carrier’s network standard.
China Mobile is developing its next-generation TD-LTE mobile network technology and there have been talks over a possible iPhone tie-up with the carrier.[That’s about as vague a timeframe as you can get.]
There are some compatibilities and similarities between TD-LTE and the LTE that Verizon and AT&T are rolling out in the US. But does that mean Apple is going to build an iPhone 5 with any type of 4G LTE? I think it is unlikely. We do know, however, that Apple has been active in the hiring of LTE engineers over the past few months.
Mr. Debarshi Kar came to Apple in January from Motorola where he was an LTE testing engineer. His hire might have been for this job. And that’s just the beginning…
According to Bloomberg, Apple is currently in negotiations with major music labels regarding some major enhancements they are planning to bring to iTunes by mid-2011. These enhancements are said to focus around an “unlimited” download approach (with help from Lala?) so users can instantly re-download lost or damaged music titles.
The potential changes, that Apple is working on with Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp., and EMI Group Ltd, would also allows users to re-download songs, on the same Apple ID account, on multiple devices.
Currently, iTunes users need to repurchase music if they want to wirelessly download the songs to other iOS devices. Users could also of course sync via iTunes on their Mac or PC to work around these download charges.
A deal would provide iTunes customers with a permanent backup of music purchases if the originals are damaged or lost, said the people. The service also would allow downloads to iPad, iPod and iPhone devices linked to the same iTunes account, they said. The move would be a step closer to universal access to content centrally stored on the Internet.
Under one plan for MobileMe, the service that now costs at least $99 a year would become free. Users could store photos, contacts, e-mail and other content on Apple’s servers, one person said. The content would be accessible through any wireless connection.
Apple and the involved music groups declined to comment. (Thanks Spencer for the Image!)
