iOS devices refer to any of Apple’s hardware that runs the iOS mobile operating system which include iPhones, iPads, and iPods. Historically, Apple releases a new iOS version once a year, the current version is iOS 10. Here is the complete list of iOS 10 compatible devices.
COMPUTERWORLD: Apple and Samsung are old frenemies. The last thing Samsung wants to do is damage Apple’s ‘iBusiness’, despite the popularity of its own Android-powered Galaxy range. Samsung will this year quadruple the number of advanced mobile processors it sells to Apple — handing over half its manufacturing output to Cupertino’s ascendant iOS family.
Every since Apple started allowing third-party companies to release applications to make iOS apps, Adobe has continued development of their ‘Packager for iPhone’ application. As Adobe says, the application “was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and easily deliver applications for iOS devices.”
Now, Macotakara reports that Adobe will be issuing an update to the software so it can create iPad apps. The update will also allow flash developers to implement gestures like pinching in their apps.
Here’s an interesting app being put out by the San Ramon Fire Department. It basically let’s you log into their 911 system and help out if an emergency is happening in your neck of the woods. Time is critical and if your neighbor is going into cardiac arrest, and you are feeling up to it, you may be able to help out.
The obvious downside is that if 30 people show up to an emergency, the professional EMTs are going to have some issues getting through all of the mess.
What if: only people trained to help could sign into the system and they’d only be alerted (push notifications?) when the emergency was within a mile radius of the user’s location? That might make a great crowdsourcing app that could save some lives.
Brrrr! It’s really, really cold at the moment for a lot of us, isn’t it? Any of you noticed any sluggishness when using your iPhone? You know — because it doesn’t work so well at under zero degrees? Well, now it seems Finland’s Consumer Agency thinks this means users are entitled to their money back. Expand Expanding Close
If you’ve been expecting a massive rush to leave AT&T for Verizon, then think again — customers on Apple’s formerly exclusive iPhone network may not be completely satisfied, but they are pretty much locked-in — at least, 90 percent of them are. Expand Expanding Close
LAWeekly reports that a Los Angeles man has filed a class action lawsuit against Apple over the iPhone 4’s glass casing. He claims that his iPhone 4’s glass broke when his daughter dropped the device, three feet above the ground, while sending a text message. He says the iPhone 3GS he owns never had a glass breaking issue when dropped from similar heights.
The man even claims that Apple “knows about the design flaw and refuses to warn consumers that “normal” use leads essentially to a broken phone.” The lawsuit gets into the fact that Apple claims the iPhone 4’s glass casing is “20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic,” “ultra-durable” and is the same “glass used in helicopters and high-speed trains.”
The plaintiff is not the only one experiencing the issue as iPhone warranty-company Square Trade says the iPhone 4’s glass breaks 82% more than the iPhone 3GS’s glass.- This was from a survey of 20,000 damaged iPhone 4s. (via The Next Web)
Apple has just released iTunes 10.1.2 and it is available via Apple’s iTunes download page and the Mac and PC software update application. The update is required for iTunes to function with the Verizon iPhone 4. Apple specifically says the “CDMA iPhone 4,” so this may be a hint at a CDMA iPhone 4 hitting carriers other than Verizon Wireless in the United States. The update also brings many important stability and performance enhancements.
iTunes 10.1.2 syncs music, movies, and more with iPhone 4 (CDMA model) and provides a number of important stability and performance improvements.
iTunes 10.1 came with several new features and improvements, including:
• Use AirPlay to instantly and wirelessly stream videos from iTunes to the all-new Apple TV.
• Sync with your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 4.2.
Interesting here that Orange just posted links to the White iPhone (joining other carriers around the world). More interesting is that it is currently priced at €20 more than its comparably-equipped black counterpart (below). The same price disparity happens at the 16GB level. Is Apple going to charge a premium for this thing? Perhaps that white paint ain’t cheap.
There is some precedence for this as Apple charged different rates initially for the Black and White MacBooks, that time the Black version was the premium version. Expand Expanding Close
COMPUTERWORLD: Apple’s iPhone marketshare gains are slowing down in the face of increased competition from Android handsets, Strategy Analytics claims in its quarterly market analysis. “Apple’s marketshare gains slowed considerably last year due to tougher competition from Android players such as Samsung, Motorola and HTC,” the analysts wrote, but with iPhone 5 looming, can Apple grow its growth curve?
Nokia is feeling the heat with rumors the company will enable support for Android apps on future devices. Company CEO, ex-Microsoft Stephen Elop described “significant challenges” fighting Apple’s iPhone and the Google OS in the market. Shares fell 8.7 percent in reponse.
“Nokia faces some significant challenges in our competitiveness and our execution,” Elop said in the company’s earnings statement today. “The industry changed and now it’s time for Nokia to change faster.” Expand Expanding Close
Apple’s “hobby” is less of a hobby these days, with in excess of one million sales the Apple TV is now accounting for more Netflix viewing hours than the iPad, Netflix announced this week.
That’s noteworthy because while Apple has sold millions of iPads it has only shifted a million Netflix-happy Apple TVs, and with a substantial slice of those sold outside of the US of A, you can bet your dollar this represents tacit proof that people are making active use of the Apple TV. MacRumorsreceived word that Verizon iPhone 4 pre-orders will begin at 3 AM Eastern time on February 3rd. The report also notes that pre-order inventory will be limited, so those who don’t get an order in then will have to wait until the public launch on February 10th.
– Make sure you have your My Verizon self-serve account set-up online. Orders can only be placed through your my Verizon account. You can register/setup your account at… myaccount.verizonwireless.com
– On February 3rd at 3am EST, Verizon Wireless will allow our current customers to order upgrades or new lines to their accounts through your My Verizon online account (make sure you have registered before the 3rd).
Verizon will also offer trade-ins, at least to corporate customers, of their AT&T GSM iPhone. The trade-in offer applies to every generation of the iPhone, but only certain storage capacities, and the trade-in prices range from $60 to $360.
According toDigitimes, “the chance is high” for Apple to adopt a dual core processor for the next iteration of the iPhone. The note comes in a report detailing new dual-core processors being developed across the mobile device industry. With new graphic intense applications and games, along with higher-resolution displays, dual-core processors are almost becoming essential for high end smartphones. As for tablets, most Honeycomb Androids will be sporting Tegra 2 dual cores.
Apple is likely to launch an updated A4 system-on-a-chip (dubbed A5?) when they launch the iPad 2, and if history repeats itself, this A5 CPU will carry on to the iPhone 5 and later the fifth-generation iPod touch. Apple has been rumored to enhance their custom-made mobile device CPUs for a while now, with recent reports coming from China, and Engadget.
Apple has traditionally used Samsung processors in every one of its iOS devices. The A4 is manufactured by Samsung and bears a resemblance to the Hummingbird CPUs found in Galaxy S phones. In that vain, Samsung is expected to release its Orion Dual Core processor at MWC in Barcelona in February which means the A5 could be right behind it.
The iPhone 5 on the other hand has been referred to as a “complete redesign” by Engadget sources. Besides the faster CPUs, there has not been too much chatter about iPhone 5 specifics. There have also been reports pointing to an updated Apple TV with the described A5 dual-core CPU.
Wow. Of all the jailbreak-only tweaks we’ve seen, this is definitely one of the coolest. A hacker has figured out a way to provide you with a 3D-like representation of your iOS homescreen app icons. The best part is that the tweak is doesn’t require 3D glasses. It’s called 3DBoard and it will soon be available for your jailbroken iOS 4 device via Cydia. (via Gizmodo and Mac Stories)
Update: Now available in the Big Boss repo in Cydia — $2.99.
COMPUTERWORLD: Apps sales are exploding while the distinction between mobile and desktop Apps will shrink when Apple gives Lion a healthy iOS habit. Developers are on a gravy train, even teenagers are making cash using skills many don’t have time to learn. “If only getting started in App development were as simple as making a WordPress Website,” some might cry. Cry no more. Red Foundry promises to make it so.
Including iPad sales, Apple is the world’s third-largest PC maker, according to the latest Canalsys figures, published today. The PC industry saw general gowth of 19 percent — clearly boosted by Apple’s strong performance.
I’ve said this before — the iPad is a PC, limited only by the power and utility of the Apps you run on the device. Canalsys agrees that iPad sales should be counted as PC sales, with the analysts latest figures confirming that Apple’s PC shipments climbed an astonishing 241 percent in Q4 2010 (including the iPad). Davos, Switzerland: We finally have it on good authority Apple is developing an LTE iPhone, with China Mobile chairman Wang Jianzhou confirming the news at the Davos Economic Forum this week.
The sources say that both the 16 GB and 32 GB models will hit the store tomorrow with part numbers MC604X/A (16GB) and MC606X/A (32GB). With only two part numbers given, we may assume that we’ll only be seeing an GSM variant of the unicorn-flavored phone. Again, this is completely unconfirmed…
But if the launch doesn’t happen tonight/tomorrow it will surely happen soon.
Apple has released a new television commercial for the iPad showcasing several innovative applications for the device. The ad shows off a DJ turn table application, the new color books feature in Apple’s iBooks application, iWork Pages for iPad, The Wall Street Journal and a few more apps. The commercial also shows a person’s flight ticket being scanned through the iPad’s display which sort of got us thinking about the NFC reports from last night.
Patently Apple reports that Apple has patented a new glove that works with capacitive touch screens. Several devices on the market use capacitive screens such as all of Apple’s mobile iOS devices: iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. This highly advanced touch screen technology senses your inputs based on proximity sensors in the display, in addition to the human body’s natural conductivity.
Because of these factors, devices like the iPhone cannot be used if the user is wearing something like a glove. Because of this, Apple is researching ways to build gloves that work around the issue. We can’t wait to see these stylishly overpriced Magic Gloves hit Apple Stores. For the full technical rundown of the patent view Patently Apple‘s report.
Macotakara reports that Apple has teamed up with a Japanese-based company to develop a brand new paint for the white iPhone 4. This paint is dubbed as a “miracle painting material” and is meant to fix the white iPhone 4’s light leakage issues. The new paint apparently allows Apple to easily control the paint’s thickness prior to application on the iPhone 4.
It appears that this new paint is truly a “miracle” as it looks like the white iPhone 4 will be launching soon. The device has already appeared in both AT&T‘s and Best Buy‘s databases.
Proving good products do their own marketing Apple’s taken a giant thumbs-up from its growing enterprise market with no less than Deutsche Bank declaring there’s “no going back” to BlackBerry after an “overwhelmingly positive” iPhone trial. Expand Expanding Close
Getting kinda cocky with our network are we now Verizon? The Wall St. Journalreports their conversation with Lowell McAdam the incoming Verizon CEO:
“I’m not going to shoot myself in the foot,” he said. Not offering an unlimited plan would put up a barrier for customers who might otherwise switch from AT&T, he said. The country’s No. 2 carrier still has millions of subscribers grandfathered into unlimited plans they signed up for before AT&T switched to tiered pricing last summer.
Update: But you’d better act fast. Speaking later Tuesday morning, Mr. McAdam said the iPhone unlimited plan will be a temporary offer and that the carrier will follow AT&T’s move to tiered pricing in the not too distant future.
Also of note: Subscriber growth slowed on Verizon in anticipation of the iPhone (at least that is what is implied). Expand Expanding Close
