The iPhone 17 Air looks wonderful – but that’s not why Apple is making it

iPhone 17 Air dummy unit

Yesterday gave us our best look yet at the upcoming iPhone 17 Air, in the form of a highly realistic dummy model shown alongside the iPhone 16 Pro.

Apple will doubtless employ a whole range of superlatives to describe the look of the device: thinnest, slimmest, sleekest … and it will of course be the <superlative>est phone they’ve ever made, and Tim will be sure we’re going to love it …

iPhone 17 Air is stunningly thin compared to iPhone 16 Pro in latest leak

iPhone 17 Air dummy unit

We’re probably 132 days away from the iPhone 17 actually being announced, yet it’s starting to feel like the iPhone 17 has been out for that long.

That’s probably because we’ve seen every design of iPhone 17 in various forms ranging from schematics to renderings for months. We’ve also seen cases, dummy units, dummy units in cases, and now dummy units that look so real that they could easily be mistaken for the real thing.

The latest iPhone 17 preview comes from Sam Kohl’s AppleTrack YouTube channel. In the video, Sam compares physical models meant to recreate the rumored iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max designs. At this rate, I’ll be disappointed if we don’t have working models running a recreation of iOS 19 by the first half of May.

iPhone 17 Air will compromise in a few areas, but this key feature won’t be one of them

iPhone 17 Air

Later this year, Apple is going to debut its thinnest iPhone to date. At just 5.5mm thin, iPhone 17 Air will be record-setting.

You might anticipate that an ultra-thin phone comes with awful battery life. After all, iPhone battery life improved drastically over the past few years, as Apple has made increasingly thicker iPhones. However, at least according to current rumors, iPhone 17 Air won’t compromise on battery life. Here’s why.

iPhone 17 Pro Max and Air will be heavily inspired by two other products

iPhone 17 Pro concept

After years of mostly unchanged iPhone lineups, Apple has already shaken things up this year by debuting the iPhone 16e instead of the expected new iPhone SE. The company is just getting started though, as this fall’s iPhone 17 family—particularly the Air and Pro Max—will change even more, with direct inspiration from the Apple Watch.

Apple has two big aces up its sleeve to rise above AI struggles

One of the biggest narratives currently going around about Apple is the company’s AI struggles. But while those struggles are very real, Apple has two big aces up its sleeve that should minimize the damage from ‘new Siri’ shipping late, and propel the company into a bright future. Those two things: innovations in Apple’s upcoming hardware and software.

EU confirms Apple can make a portless iPhone without USB-C

EU confirms Apple can make a portless iPhone without USB-C | MagSafe charger on colorful background

The iPhone 17 Air is expected to be the slimmest iPhone Apple has ever made, and a report over the weekend suggested that the company even considered making it the first portless phone. It said the iPhone maker ultimately decided against this, in part because it feared removing the USB-C port would have brought it into conflict with the EU.

However, I’ve had confirmation from the bloc that dropping the USB-C port for a completely portless phone would in fact be completely legal …

Report: Apple considered removing USB-C port from iPhone 17 Air, more

iPhone 17 Air display

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iPhone 17 Air will feature a number of features from the iPhone 16 Pro, including Camera Control and ProMotion. Rumors have long suggested that the entire iPhone 17 lineup would feature ProMotion, but it wasn’t quite clear whether or not iPhone 17 Air would feature Camera Control. Despite the thinness though, it now seems likely the phone will feature Camera Control.

Apple had also considered making the iPhone 17 Air its first “port-free” iPhone, and going all in on wireless charging. The company ultimately decided against this.

Here’s how thin the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be, with the camera bar

The upcoming iPhone 17 Air is expected to be all about sleekness – getting the thinnest iPhone ever, though at the expense of specifications.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo surprised everyone earlier this year when he suggested that the device may be even thinner than expected, and his view has now been echoed by another leaker …
