It feels like Apple TV+ is gaining ground in the public consciousness, with dramas like Severance, Silo, and Slow Horses, breaking through.
The availability of the Apple TV app is one reason why more people are finding Apple’s shows, now available on games consoles, cable boxes and more. Unfortunately, there is still no Apple TV+ app for Android phones and TVs. Despite that, here’s the best ways to watch Apple TV+ on Android.
Somewhat confusingly, if you search the Google Play Store for an Apple TV app, one is actually listed but it is noted as incompatible for your phone. This is because the Android Apple TV app listing that appears is specifically for Android TV sets, not mobile devices. There are rumors that Apple will eventually release an actual Android Apple TV+ app, but nothing has been officially confirmed.
In the meantime, here’s the best ways to watch Apple TV+ if you don’t have an Apple device.
Apple TV+ on the web
You can watch Apple TV+ in a web browser at tv.apple.com. This works on most Android phones and tablets, and if you use Chrome, you can add the website as an app on your home screen. The browser quality is limited to HD resolution, not 4K.
You can sign up through the web, making a fresh Apple Account in the process. You can then pay for the subscription and watch Apple TV+ online.
However, if you had an Apple ID a long time ago, and try and use the same email, the path isn’t necessarily so simple. You might get an error like “Before you can sign in on the web, first sign into the Apple TV app on your iPhone or iPad. On a computer, sign in to Apple TV or iTunes”.
A workaround for this only using Android is to use the Apple Music app, which is available for Android phones. If you start an Apple Music trial, and then cancel it, it will unlock the account and you won’t be charged. No PC or Apple device required.
Apple TV+ channel through Prime Video
The perhaps easiest way to watch Apple TV+ on Android is to use the new partnership with Amazon Prime Video. You can now subscribe to Apple TV+ without using the Apple TV app at all, instead buying the channel through Amazon instead.
You can simply do this using the Prime Video app on your Android phone, using your Amazon billing information. Buy the Apple TV+ channel, and then you can watch all the Apple original content through Prime Video.
This includes adding Apple shows to your watch queue, integrated with the rest of the Prime Video app. It’s a much nicer experience than using the Apple TV website, frankly. The Prime Video app even offers Apple TV+ content in 4K quality, something you can’t get through the Apple TV website directly.
And if you buy Apple TV+ through Prime Video, you can then also view it on Prime Video apps on other platforms, like if you have a TV that doesn’t support the Apple TV app natively, it probably has the Amazon Prime app.
Summary
Hopefully, Apple will just release its own Android app and avoid all this nonsense.
But for the time being, using the web or going through Amazon Prime Video is the best choice for Android users wanting to enjoy Apple TV+ content.
