Apple to abandon Infineon, go Qualcomm in future iPhone baseband as Intel dance goes on
Apple may abandon use of Infineon baseband solutions in its future iPhone 5 following the latter firm’s acquisition by processor giant, Intel.
The China Times tells us Apple may instead choose to use baseband solutoins from Qualcomm in the next-gen iPhone. That report adds that such a switch might already have taken place in other Apple products, naming the iPad as one such.
The news has also sparked fresh chatter speculating Apple plans to launch a CDMA iPhone next year, enabling the firm to offer the device via networks other than AT&T in the US.
A recent report claims Intel CEO Paul otellini contacted Apple’s Steve Jobs to discuss the Infineon purchase and that Jobs seemed happy for that deal to go ahead at that time.
Perhaps because Jobs knew Apple was already migrating to a different manufacturer?
