Apple-iPad-event-2013 2013-10-22 at 1.49.18 PM

Following a brief appearance on its website over the weekend, Apple announced major updates to its iLife apps for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and Mac.

Eddy Cue took the stage today at debut new versions of iLife for iOS and OS X.

Along with new icons, Cue demoed iPhoto for iPad. Photo Books can now be composed directly from iPad, a feature previously limited to the Mac.

iMovie for iOS now includes “desktop class effects” like picture-in-picture. iMovie for OS X now includes a new design and support for editing speeds in 120 fps video like what can be shot on the iPhone 5s.

Garageband for iOS now supports 16 tracks on all devices (up to 32 tracks on 64-bit devices like the iPhone 5s; previously limited to 8 tracks). Garageband on the Mac features new starter content and in-app purchases featuring real artists performing instruments in a feature called Drummer (previously exclusive to Logic Pro X).

Price wise, the Mac updates are made free with the purchase of a new Mac and available today. (Full press release below)

A FYI on iMovie 10.0 released today, if you have a Mid-2007 iMac. Mavericks installed just fine, but iMovie says the graphics card does not support it, so it won’t download an install. IPhoto worked, but GarageBand hasn’t shown up for upgrade yet, so I don’t know if it will work.

I’m not impressed. I thought Mavericks would optimize my Mac enough for all of the new iLife apps to work but apparently not.

My iMac has the ATI HD Radeon 2600 Pro 256 MB graphics card. I would think that would run iMovie if even at a slower rate given that Mavericks installs and runs quite nicely.

I do hope that the new iMovie might be supported with a point update. Should I hold my breath? Sigh….

Well, I had the same problem. But, strangely enough, once I had downloaded all the other iLife applications, iMovie seemed to download. It works well and it says nothing more about incompatibility. It was very strange…

So if I bought iLife ’11 before the App Store opened, do I have to pay for these updates?

  4. gregoriusm - 10 years ago

Well, apparently if you click on Update beside iMovie 10.0 a dozen times, and get an error message a dozen times, over the space of an hour, and then just leave the Mac App Store app open for another half hour, it decides to download the iMovie 10.0 app all by itself and install it.

    Opened it. Works fine!

    Greg = happy!

anyone else notice the animated Garageband icon in Launchpad?

My IMac will not allow me to update IPhoto or IMovie, and hasn’t for ages, even though I have owned it since new – and yes I have the new Maverick – problem is, it thinks someone else installed it, and will not let me reinstall it myself, or even purchase.

This is a stark contrast to Bill Gates’ prediction back in 2004, when he predicted computer hardware eventually becoming (almost) free and you’d mostly pay for software and service costs only. Anyone remember that?

And now Apple rolls out a “pay for your hardware and you get free software for life” system. But consumers seem to buy it :)
