iTunes 12.2 update indicates new gold, dark blue, dark pink iPod nano, touch + shuffle colors

Screen Shot 2015-07-01 at 10.02.53 AM

Apple could be preparing to refresh its aging iPod lineup with new colors, according to a new image found inside of yesterday’s iTunes 12.2 update for Apple Music. With the new update, when a user plugs in an iPod for the first time, the above image showcasing a dark blue iPod touch, a gold iPod nano, and a dark pink iPod shuffle appear. None of those iPod color options currently exist, indicating that Apple could be preparing to refresh its line with those richer tones. Interestingly, the Touch lacks a hole for the camera loop.

It is possible that the image is simply a Photoshop error, which would not be unprecedented, but our look into the previous version of iTunes, version 12.1.2, indicates that the image is actually new, which means that it was intentionally designed. There is currently no indication as to if and when Apple is planning to release new iPod colors, but we are told that iPod nano and touch stock at Apple Stores is currently seeing some temporary shortages.

Update: We’ve now spotted new gold, dark blue, and dark pink tones for all iPods:

oh wow, that blue looks awful. And when will they ever bring the iOS 7/8/9 UI to the iPod Nano?

    • rogifan - 9 years ago

      What’s awful about it?

      • larspinkwart - 9 years ago

I don’t know but I don’t like it, but I guess thats just personal taste.

    • jacosta45 - 9 years ago

I like the dark blue better than light.

Wow didn’t see the iPod nano coming. That image reminds me how beautiful the iPod touch is. Remember how we all dreamed of iPhones as thin as the iPod touch? What happened to those dreams? If only they could just stick cellular in an iPod touch body. It would be incredible.

    • To support cellular you more power. A lot more power. So you need a larger battery…

      • Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 9 years ago

a little less power with that new qualcomm lte chip though, eh? I can dream.

It wasn’t the thickness of the iPod Touch that I loved, it was the design. The one-colored back of it is absolutely gorgeous. I hated the 5/5S and I’m not a fan of the 6 either. Those antenna lines and colors (what ever happened to black?) are just plain stupid.

      • Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 9 years ago

yea, I agree. I like how they handled the wifi area too. The black cutout looks more elegant than the lines but maybe that doesn’t really work out well for modern cellular. And yea, thickness isn’t really that big an issue. I’m just always impressed when I pick up the touch and feel just how thin it is.

They can’t do slate grey (or black) because of the aluminum that is used. When the 5 came out a lot of ppl (including myself) complained the color was wearing off too easily. When they try to use a dark color with aluminum, the finish doesn’t hold up well against regular wear and tear and that particular color is more expensive, which is why they switched to space grey and which is why the space black  watch is more expensive than the silver.

I wish slate grey were brought back though :(

The iPhone 6 is 6.9mm they are so close to each other dreams already came true

Interestingly, the iPod Touch is showing iOS 8 possibly meaning new colors will be out before September. Even more interestingly is that the iPod Nano’s software isn’t updating the look-and-feel of the software.

I’m not sure why everyone is always clammoring for the discontinuation of the iPod lineup. IMO, it’s the perfect entry-level device for kids (who wants to pay for cellular plans when you don’t have to) as well as the gym. I used a variety of armbands with my iPhones over the years but I always keep going back to my iPod Shuffle for running or the gym. The iPod lineup offers a tremendous value for the price, and in the case of the iPod Touch, you can even FaceTime and text over WiFi.

No Touch ID? Interesting I would assume it would get it

    • Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 9 years ago

It just doesn’t strike me as worth the expense. I’m sure more shopping is done on iPhones and iPads. I’d think that force touch would come before touch ID simply because it has a lot of potential for gaming and that would make sense for an iPod.

I’m not sure the iPhone color will get it either – even if they push the 5s’ internals to it.

  6. Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 9 years ago

Now they’ve got colors for boys, girls, and China!

Quite frankly I wish they’d up the capacity of the touch to 128 GB and the Nano to 32 GB. While not 160, then it would almost be a suitable replacement for the Classic…

Release date: Tue 14 July (as in the Calendar)

Maybe it’s just me, but how is this still a thing? The iPod Touch needs a total redesign at this point to get it up to date with the iPhone 6/6+. It’s only real application is for people who want an iPhone and not a phone, which I would imagine in most of Apple’s markets is a rather small demographic. Most modern apps and games are way too much for current iPod processors and memory. Unless they are doing some serious improvements internally (which honestly, I doubt at this point) they should just kill off the iPod Touch and add the extra colors to the iPad mini or something.
The nano is theoretically replaced by the Apple watch the moment they drop the price in a year or so. The shuffle is the only one I see lasting but only as a really need a running iPod.
All those considered, couldn’t they at least try and match the sports band/powerbeats 2/silicon case for iPhone 6/6+/iOS/iPhone 5c colors? Who was really the guy who was like “forget the blue and pink we already use in EVERYTHING else and use these ones”.

I love my iPod touch! You get almost everything the iPhone has for less then half the price and no contract. My wife and I have not had cell phones for 7-8 years now and the iPod touch, and/or iPad with free wifi everywhere today dose most of what an iPhone can do. Plus no one calls today they text anyways.

What the iPod touch need is a mayor update to the iPhone 6 size and internals. It’s still a great device for kids and for music. But in looking at the photos looks like it will stay the same old size with most likely a small up in the internals which is sad.

Give me Touch ID and updated internals and I`m sold.

I love the dark blue model, it’s amazing!

  13. kelownadon - 9 years ago

I have been waiting for a new ipod touch that is the same size as an iphone 6 or 6+. Don’t really care which one but unless it is made bigger it is a waste of money to me. Will keep the old one.
