Apple’s new Lightning-equipped Beats Pill+ is now available

Apple TV 4 isn’t the only new hardware coming out of Cupertino today. Announced earlier this month, the new Beats Pill+ is now available to order for $229 in black or white finishes. The new portable Bluetooth speaker is the first new design to come out of Beats since Apple bought the headphones and speaker company last for $3 billion last year in part to use its Beats Music service as the foundation for Apple Music. The rechargeable speaker uses a Lightning port and cable, the same as iPhones, to power up for up to 12 hours of use.

Pill+ also works with an app, coming soon to both iPhone and Android, to let you and friends control what music plays next as well as set the sound preferences. UE recently added a similar feature to its portable speakers. The Pill+ also supports pairing two units together for a stereo effect.

Similar to the larger recalled Pill XL and cheaper Pill 2.0 (reg. $199, on sale $155), Pill+ also features a USB port with charge out for powering your smartphone on-the-go using the speaker’s built-in battery. Like other Beats speakers, Pill+ still relies on Bluetooth (or line-in) and doesn’t support Wi-Fi or AirPlay. Technically Apple’s first foray into speakers since the short-lived iPod Hi-Fi in the mid-2000s, Apple’s proprietary Lightning port and Apple Inc. stamp on the bottom is the only major changes here from other Beats speakers aside from the clearly Apple-influenced redesign.

Beats Pill+ is available to order for $229 in either black or white from Apple.com with other retailers coming soon. Free shipping promises Wednesday deliveries for most people with paid options for shipping as soon as before noon tomorrow. Beats Pill+ comes with a black 1.5m Beats-branded Lightning cable and 12.5W power adapter for recharging.
