Apple's tablet to have 3D navigation system?

We reported back in December that Apple had submitted some patents for 3D Operating System navigation.  It turns out that they’ve also been looking at 3D multi-touch as a way of navigating a multi-touch tablet/iPhone.  The Baltimore Sun (via PED) dug up a patent from last month (#20090303231, Dec. 10, 2009  to be exact) on just such an idea.

[0034]The device supports a variety of applications, such as one or more of the following: a game application, a telephone application, a video conferencing application, an e-mail application, an instant messaging application, a blogging application, a photo management application, a digital camera application, a digital video camera application, a web browsing application, a digital music player application, and/or a digital video player application.

If this patent comes to fruition, the next iPhone/iPod/tablet interface might be nothing like anything we’ve seen before, and it could perhaps explain why we’ve been hearing the possibility of a “new type of interaction” to accompany the tablet.

Apple hires 'Senior Prototype Engineer' for work on wearable computing

Richard DeVaul‘s Linkedin status changed last month from Founder & President at AWare Technologies to Senior Prototype Engineer at Apple computer. This is a significant hire for Apple and one that shows the company is looking far ahead into the future of mobile computing.

DeVaul will be working under Jonny Ive in a secret lab focused on wearable computing technology where only seven people besides Ive and CEO Steve Jobs know what he is doing.

We've figured out the identity of the Apple employee who got fired for having a 3G iPad out during the launch

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmlaYwb_7Lw&w=700&h=400]

Following yesterday’s news about the Apple employee being fired over showing Woz the iPad 3G, we looked more into the ordeal and have discovered who the Apple employee actually was. The night of the incident at the Valley Fair Apple Store, a video showing an Apple employee showing of the 3G iPad to Woz and others hit the interwebs.

Up until now nobody saw the face of the employee but 9to5mac managed to secure a video shot from a different angle (thanks SolTran!). This angle clearly shows who the employee is (He’s the one saying “I work for Apple”), and you can clearly see he is holding an iPad 3G due to the black bar at the top. We’ve done some snooping around on Linkedin and determined the recently terminated engineer is AJ…nevermind.

Just like Woz, we truly feel horrible for AJ and wish him the best of luck in the future. It seems he has already landed a new job with Roxio doing Quality Assurance, which is fantastic.  A blown up shot of the iPad 3G below from that fateful night below

iPhone 4 goes social with Facebook integration

An Engadget reader found some interesting codes in the iPhone 4 OS which seem likely to indicate some more Facebook integration (you can already set up Facebook to merge your contacts).   Interestingly there is now a generic “SocialKitInternal.framework” which would seem to indicate a broader interface for integration.  Linkedin and Twitter perhaps?  Or maybe Friendster!

App Store Director, Phillip Shoemaker, sells Fart Apps and Urinating Simulators on his App Store [Updated with Tweets]

This is a lovely one, and we couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw this. Phillip Shoemaker, the guy Jobs and Co. brought in to lead the App Store has his owns app under the company name, GrayNoodle LLC. These aren’t your everyday apps from such a professional guy, but are apps that allow you to hear animal fart sounds and practice your mad peeing skills.

For the developers out there, in case you didn’t know… This is the same fine individual who’s in charge of removing and rejecting your fine applications. Shoemaker even has a website for his apps here. One of his most popular apps, iWiz, helps you “simulate the experience of urination for a long time”, which is nice, right?

An Apple spokesperson says Shoemaker’s “perspective as a developer is one of the valuable things he brings to Apple’s developer relations team,” and this honestly makes sense. Wired discovered Shoemaker’s class-act by snooping around his Linkedin profile. All references have been removed and we truly wish Philly well.

The very best of Shoemakers tweets are after the break:
