Yahoo Weather iOS app adds new animated effects for weather conditions, updated design for iPhone 6/6Plus

Yahoo announced an update to its Weather app today that brings more of the high-quality animations for weather conditions it first launched in its iOS app earlier this year. The update also adds a revamped design that offers a better experience on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The new animated effects include visuals for lightning and frost, which come in addition to the fog, rain, heat, and snow effects the app had previously. Yahoo’s announcement says the effects utilize “bleeding-edge graphics technology typically only seen in video games.”

We’re excited to take your weather experience to the next level, as we make it even more delightful… So, instead of reading about the stormy conditions, you’ll actually see lightning flash across your screen.

The animations and updated design that takes advantage of the new larger iPhones are are available in the latest version of the Yahoo Weather app for iPhone and iPad.

What’s New in Version 1.6.5

– Updated designs for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
– Added animated effects for lightning and frost
– Bug fixes and performance improvements
– Updated Privacy Policy

It does? Where do you see that? Is it obnoxious, intruding? The only ad I see is for Flickr…

Scroll down past the initial screen to see the ad. It’s huge! 😰

I like this app, I think it’s done beautifully. And putting various pictures of the cities as the background seemed so obvious the first time I openend the app, but it’s actually quite clever. Whether people agree to their Flickr photos being used that way is for a different discussion. It’s nice that one can view the picture without any text overlaid by viewing it in Landscape orientation and tapping the screen once. The windmills indicating the wind speed is a nice touch, and I like the animations I saw with the previous update. This app actually let me to download their news app, which is …ok, but nothing like this weather app though.

Yep, annoying ads right in the middle of the weather feed. Otherwise it’s a beautiful app…but those ads are REALLY distracting and annoying. Alas, goodbye Yahoo Weather…*deleted off phone*

Strange, I don’t get an ad. I only see the Flickr and WU icons – no ads. Could they have different versions for different countries? edit, nope. According to the reviews in my iTunes Store in Europe, as well as the US Store, the ads are there (I don’t see them though). The US Store even has more 1 star votes than 5 star votes. People are willing to pay for the ads to go away. Guess I’ll hang on to my backup of 1.6.4 in case I get the ads as well.
