More Beats 1 hosts revealed ahead of launch, will include shows from Dr. Dre, Drake, and more

Along with today’s announcement that Zane Lowe’s first Beats 1 interview will be with Eminem, a New York Times profile on the DJ revealed the titles and hosts for other shows on Apple’s upcoming music streaming service.

As you might expect, Apple’s own Dr. Dre will be hosting a show of his own called “The Pharmacy.” Rapper Drake, who appeared on stage at the Apple Music announcement, will also have a show on the streaming radio service.

Singer Elton John will host “The Elton John Rocket Hour,” and Pharrell Williams, who will launch his new single exclusively on Apple Music later this month, will take on hosting duties as well. Other hosts of unnamed shows will include St. Vincent, Disclosure, Josh Homme and actor & rapper Jaden Smith.

There’s no word on whether Beats co-founder and music industry titan Jimmy Iovine will also host a show, but it seems he’s focusing more on the corporate side of things for now. Also unlikely to host a show, Taylor Swift, who publicly criticized Apple’s plans to withhold payments from record labels during a free trial period, only to have the company change its policy later that night. Today Swift announced that she would allow her latest album to stream on the service as a result of the change.

Officially the least interesting thing Apple has done since…..Ping, I guess. (referring to Beats1)

I’m actually excited to see how this works out!

I love radio and this sounds like it will be pretty damn good.

  4. irelandjnr - 9 years ago

Also unlikely Taylor Swift? Because she criticised Apple’s plans? Really?

    • Mike Beasley - 9 years ago

No, it’s unlikely because there has been absolutely no indication that she even has a passing interest in hosting a show on a service she publicly spoke out against just a few days ago.

      • michaelwonders - 9 years ago

This could be said for almost everyone else in the world. “There is no indication that Michael Beasley will be hosting a program.” I don’t understand why Swift is being pointed out here. She has nothing to do with Beats 1.

Hopefully Drake will practice a little more for his own show than he did for his part of the WWDC presentation. ;)

The biggest radio station can be anything it wants to be at any time with access to a giant library at all times and could even help be a catalyst to exposing millions of people to exotic new music…

…………..nah, let’s just mostly push the same old stuff, because it’s still the 90’s and what is this “Internet” with this “artistic diversity”? :)

    • stoplion22 - 9 years ago

…..? There is a lot of diversity in that list and it’s hardly the complete one… You must be trolling, or perhaps you may be one of the very people you mention who could use this as a catalyst to expose yourself to exotic new music.

      • Jake Becker - 9 years ago

A complete list may make me rethink my opinion. As for the second part, my (physical) music collection is quite large and diverse, and everybody (including me) can always be exposed to art they haven’t yet encountered. It’s frustrating that in the general scheme of things, we aren’t further along at this point in the game where literally everything can be accessed and often for free to some extent.

  7. Aside from Elton John, are the rest of these people supposed to be famous? Are they actual musicians or all just a bunch of rappers and hip-hop guys?

  8. So I guess hard rock fans aren’t going to get any love. At all.

  9. Chief Keef should have a show called “bang bang”.

  10. I don’t know what talent does this guy have??
    Can he write/read music notes?
Can he play an instrument? Any instrument?
If thats talent, what would you call ColdPlay or Alisha Keys or Lady Gaga?
    What a shame!

    • stoplion22 - 9 years ago

So ignorant. Get out from under that rock and perhaps try to understand before criticizing rather than just taking pride in being a snarky dick, the man has talent.

      • Rich Davis (@RichDavis9) - 9 years ago

Who has talent? Drake? Talent in what? He uses pitch correction to make him sound like he can sing, so where exactly is the talent? Rapping doesn’t require knowing anything about music, so, again, what talent does Drake have? Being able to convince people that he has talent?

What is there to understand about Drake? He’s not really a legitimate musical since he doesn’t really play a musical instrument or actually sing, so he doesn’t have musical talent. Having musical talent typically requires one to actually play a musical instrument or sing.

      • n who plays a musical instrument or is musically talented, or one who composes, conducts, or performs music. Musicians can specialize in any musical style, and some musicians play in a variety of different styles.

    Oh goodie more Drake…
    Elton John I approve though.

  12. bdkennedy11 - 9 years ago

So if you love hip hop and rap, enjoy the show.

  13. I would say Jaden Smith raps more than he acts….

  14. Edward David Jennings - 9 years ago

I look forward to listening to the various DJs and what they will be programming for us. SiriusXM and terrestrial radio fail to provide us with quality radio programming. Beats1 just might be the disruption we need to shake up the dial, no wait shake up the Web ;)

  15. Jesse Nichols - 9 years ago

Most excited for an Elton John show… That’s pretty cool…

  16. Jesse Nichols - 9 years ago

How great would it be if Elton John hosts and plays nothing but hardcore gangsta rap..? Lol

  17. mokh70 - 9 years ago

    good

  18. Sticking with RDIO, Apple is catering to the hip hop crowd and you can keep that crizzap. RDIO is the perfect combination of Spotify and Pandora. Even if Apple Music end up being a cut above I will still not use it just because of all the Beats, Drake , Dr Crizzap whatever…

    • proudinfidelusmc - 9 years ago

you do know that all these hip hop artists/djs are for their Beats 1 radio station music curating, right? They will still have “radio stations” just like Spotify and Pandora. I hate modern rap/hip hop, so I have no interest in Beats 1, but I will continue to use iTunes Radio which will be rolled into Apple Music.
