AT&T revamping data plans with fewer options at better rates starting tomorrow

Starting tomorrow, AT&T will be revamping its Mobile Share Value plans by adjusting data tiers and plan prices for new and current subscribers. At the low end, AT&T is consolidating a few data tiers into just two options with different price points. Meanwhile, AT&T’s double digit data tiers are also being reduced, and some subscribers can potentially end up with more data at no extra cost per month or get a better rate on even higher data tiers.

While AT&T’s 300MB option for $20/month remains unchanged (and not recommended), the carrier is consolidating single digit data tiers from three options down to just two. Mobile Share Value currently offers 1 GB for $25/month, 3GB for $40/month, and 6GB for $70/month, but starting tomorrow that simplifies to 2GB for $30/month and 5GB for $50/month. Not major changes here, but you could potentially drop or jump to a better suited tier for a better deal or to save some money.

For subscribers needing more data (this is where I fall), AT&T’s refreshed Mobile Share Value plans can offer more data at the same rate, or even more data at a better rate than old plans. Today, AT&T offers 10GB for $100/month and 15GB for $130/month, but starting tomorrow AT&T will remove the 10GB tier and offer 15GB at its $100/month rate. Subscribers looking for even more data will find the current 20GB data for $150/month drops to $140/month tomorrow.

Also starting tomorrow, AT&T’s 15GB and 20GB tiers will include unlimited talk and text to Mexico and Canada, competing with T-Mobile’s recent ‘Mobile without Borders’ feature. Other perks for higher tiers include $15/month access fees for AT&T Next phones versus the $25/month rate at tiers below 15GB. The carrier notes that it will continue to offer data at 25GB, 30GB, 40GB, and 50GB as well.

Subscribers using today’s data tiers and rates won’t see any change, of course, but current and new subscribers can access the new plans and rates starting tomorrow so you’ll want to change your plan, especially if you’re a 10GB subscriber, to take advantage of the better deal.

  1. a rip-off like always… 300mb for 20 dollars is just miserable, should be 3gb instead

    • Uriel Sandkovsky - 9 years ago

it is a ripoff. If you do not have unlimited data plans (I think few need unlimited plans anyway) it makes sense to go for Mobileshare… and especially when 300 mb is $20 and 3 GB $30….

    • galley99 - 9 years ago

I had a 250MB iPhone data plan for three years and only went over once. I had the unlimited data plan on an iPad at the time, though.

Yeah come Sept I am moving my 3 other lines to Tmobile. Close by no cigar. You cant beat free data and sms on all those countries. Even if its only on Edge.

    • Andrew Messenger - 9 years ago

Do it before Labor Day (September 7th) and you’ll get 4 lines for the price of 3. I moved all of mine because AT&T obviously just doesn’t fucking get it.

      • lt1213 - 9 years ago

I’m moving mine to T-Mobile too. AT&T needs to step down if they want to survive

Any word on the grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan for iPhones? I hope it still qualifies for subsidized phone pricing.

    • lt1213 - 9 years ago

From what I’ve heard you will have to go to Next to get grandfathered in your unlimited plan. If you get a subsidized phone pricing you will loose it and you’re only getting a subsidized phone if you buy it directly from AT&T. Which is a a thumbs down for me since I like to shop at the Apple Store :(

      • freediverx - 9 years ago

No, but you will likely have to go to a crappy AT&T store to renew your unlimited plan.

    • Uriel Sandkovsky - 9 years ago

it does as long as you sign a 2 year contract….
if your contract is up for renewal you can get a new iPhone with NEXT at Apple.com or either next, full price or subsidized on the ATT website

  4. I use Cricket, which is owed by ATT, and get 10gb for $55 a month. The difference in price is crazy.

    • freediverx - 9 years ago

If that were the whole story, then everyone would be switching from AT&T to Cricket. either the service/coverage is not the same, or you’re leaving out some key details of their plans.

      • Scott (@ScooterComputer) - 9 years ago

@cocacolakid is correct, @freediverx. Cricket Wireless is owned by AT&T. Cricket offers Visual Voicemail (a feature many other pre-pay providers do not support). And Cricket has a 10GB plan for $55 if you autopay. The cell service is EXACTLY the same. As a bonus, Cricket does not have “overages” on their data plans; if you go over your allotment your service is throttled until the beginning of your next billing period when it automatically goes back to LTE speeds (but it DOES get throttled to a pretty slow speed). The only thing that is demonstrably inferior is the customer service, however I found AT&T’s support folks to be a bunch of liars and a-holes, so I’m not sure how “inferior” it really could be called when your expectations are that low.

In short, I’m not sure why everyone is NOT switching. But that AT&T bought Cricket shows they’re aware that people SHOULD switch; they want to keep the customers rather than lose them to AmericaMovil (StraightTalk/Net10/Trac) and the like. I highly recommend to everyone who is overpaying the corporate behemoth AT&T to check out Cricket’s website and service plan prices. Why give a corporate giant more of your hard-earned money that it doesn’t deserve? (Not a paid shill, just hate greedy AT&T but live in an area where T-mobile isn’t yet well built-out.)

      • Scott (@scotte525) - 9 years ago

I live in New England and had gone from Verizon to T-Mobile which was great except when I travelled outside the city, I had no service. I switched to Cricket once they were purchased by AT&T and have been happy ever since. I always have cell service and by bill is much cheaper. Cricket like the others (StraightTalk, MetroPCS, etc) caps your LTE speed, however for me this has not been an issue; I stream movies, music, and use a bunch of other apps and not noticed a difference. I have yet to go anywhere with friends that have AT&T and Verizon phones that I do not have service.

I’d like to know the cheapest per month phone/data plan. I’ve never had a contract/plan nor any data. Waiting for them to get cheap.

  6. William Robinson - 9 years ago

Should we assume that if one changes plans one has their two year contract reboot. I’m half way through my iPhone 6 contract. If I give up unlimited data for a 3G plan, to save some cash, will the two year contract begin again?

    • hz64 - 9 years ago

No, you can change plans during the contract and it will not restart the clock. You can switch back and forth without limit as long as ATT still provides the plan.

    • jorheu - 9 years ago

You can change your data plan whenever if that’s what you’re asking they’ll just add on the difference next pay cycle

    Translation:

While exploring opportunities for increasing revenues, AT&T reviewed their customer database and observed that a large number of them currently opt for the $25 and $40 monthly plans. Instead of offering new or better features that those customers would willingly pay more for, they eliminated their current plans altogether and offered new ones with more data than they need for more money than they want to pay – giving them no choice but to pay more.

I was on the 10GB mobile share plan and at some point in the winter or spring they gave me another 5GB so I was already on 15GB for $100. I guess the good part is I need to add another line at xmas so that will only be $15 per month instead of $25.

  9. jorheu - 9 years ago

I had the 300mb plan and upgraded to the 1gb because the 300 was worthless. Then randomly about a month later I got an email saying my data would be upgraded to 2gb for free, hopefully I’ll still only have to pay 25 a month for my 2gb
