First build of iOS 9.1 now available to public beta testers

iOS 9.0 may not yet be available to the public, but Apple is already seeding the next version of the mobile operating system to testers. Yesterday developers got their hands on the first version of iOS 9.1, and today the same has been made available for users on the public iOS beta.

To download the new build, which includes support for new emoji characters, users can head over to the Apple Beta website and enroll their iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. After a reboot, iOS 9.1 should show up under the Software Update tab in the Settings app.

Thus far there haven’t been a whole lot of changes in the new build, though some users are reporting much better performance over the GM build of iOS 9. There are also new APIs for developers building iPhone 6s apps with 3D Touch and Live Photos, but little else seems to have changed.

are you saying performance is better on the 9.1 beta then 9.0 GM?

  2. bobyey - 9 years ago

If you are already in the Public Beta program, and have Public Beta 9.0 then the update will be in there without having to go to the website

    • macmaniman - 9 years ago

i dont see the 9 GM, does anyone else have it?

      • bobyey - 9 years ago

They aren’t releasing the 9 GM to public beta

  3. Radek ÄŒep (@radekcep) - 9 years ago

Will it be possible to seamlessly leave iOS beta program as Apple releases iOS 9 to public?

  4. Aaron M. Bielert - 9 years ago

On the Public Beta site it now lets you install a profile for WatchOS. Wonder if they are planning public betas in the future. Still installing iOS 9.1 so don’t know if it will update watch to OS 2 or not yet…

    • Aaron M. Bielert - 9 years ago

I can confirm this does not give you watch os 2 early but it does make watch os 1 work better with ios 9.1
From what I’ve read several places. iOS 9.1 is actually more stable & better performance than iOS 9 GM

      • macmaniman - 9 years ago

can you please send a link or 2? i don’t find any good sources for this!

  5. taoprophet420 - 9 years ago

Changed verification for Apple Pay at least on iPad Air 2 and using Bank of America. Hopefully it’s an overhaul security update.

    • taoprophet420 - 9 years ago

Changed verification for Capitwl one too. On capital on you have to verify via its banking app or call, BOA text, email or call to authenticate

Does this mean we’ll never get 9.0 Public release? I was just testing the Public Betas out, thinking we’d get the Public Release version at the end. Does this mean we’ll never get the most stable Public Release and keep getting the betas??

    • Tinny - 9 years ago

My exact doubt. In case we are forced to restore

    • gregonaut - 9 years ago

Just uninstall the beta profile under General>profiles

      • Saad Bennani - 9 years ago

Are you sure ? that’s all ? I use public beta to and i want the officiel one on 16 septembre.

      • Saad Bennani - 9 years ago

I will have on software update the ios 9 Officiel ?

    • Oskar Minin (@paumin) - 9 years ago

      my exact worry
I think that when 9.0 drops it will not be available for OTA update for people running 9.1 Beta 1

      • Mike Beasley - 9 years ago

It certainly won’t. That would be a downgrade. If you’re running a later version of iOS, it won’t detect “updates” to previous versions.

  7. applegetridofsimandjack - 9 years ago

Did anyone else notice memory management is a lot better in iOS 9 than in iOS 8? I’m talking like A LOT BETTER.

  8. Works great on iPhone 4S.

  9. Abdel Amador - 9 years ago

What do I have to do if I have the public beta installed and I want to have the iOS 9 GM the day of its release? It updates normally?

    • Mike Beasley - 9 years ago

If you’re on the public beta channel and want to go to the official build of iOS 9, just remove the iOS beta profile in the Settings app and reboot. You’ll be back on the public channel and get the release version of iOS 9 on Wednesday.

  10. FYI…did a fresh install of 9.1 beta 1 and whatsapp does not seem to be working, it just prompts to install the latest version from the appstore. Some other users are reporting the same when fresh installing. If whatsapp is a must, you may want to avoid this update until Whatsapp updates its app.

    • lth0ms0n - 9 years ago

I’ve found this problem with mine also and been trawling the internet for an answer. Not ideal, I’m fairly dependent on that for my business!

      • Not the reply you’re hoping for, but if you use your device for mission critical situations at work it’s not a good idea to install betas on it.

    • Jamushroom (@Jamushroom) - 9 years ago

Apparently the only fix is to use the beta version of Whatsapp, which only beta testers have access to :(

    • cesarse - 9 years ago

Whatsapp works if you restore the backup from iTunes or iCloud after installing iOS 9.1 because you don’t need to activate it in this case.

      • Jamushroom (@Jamushroom) - 9 years ago

So, I have WhatsApp installed and activated now on iOS 9. If I’d run the OTA update to 9.1 my WhatsApp will still work?

      • cesarse - 9 years ago

Yep. The error occurs only during the activation, because the app is neither able to call nor send SMS.

      • Jamushroom (@Jamushroom) - 9 years ago

Hm, dangerous. I can’t do without Whatsapp so I’m not too sure yet, haha

      • Philip Lundberg - 9 years ago

Following upgrade to 9.1 PB iPhone 6 battery life cratered and phone got very hot whilst charging and on calls. Did a complete restore of the software and loaded the apps manually (I don’t have a lot) as I suspected an API issue with a misbehaving app. Previous PBs had had problems with iCloud drive and Backup. Had the same problem with Whatsapp as you guys but having said that it seems that it was the misbehaving app as the phone is now back to normal with exceptional battery life. Waiting for a Whatsapp patch. As this is a beta you should really have alternative ways of communicating and not rely on the software on your primary device without realising the downside. Whilst Apple are great they are not prefect!

Whatsapp works on a fresh install of the new iOS 9.1 beta 2. \o/

iOS 9.1 beta has news app for UK users

  12. Janine Adamski Matta - 9 years ago

Is everyone seeing the new keyboard displayed as it is on the Apple website? I don’t have the “scissors” icon. I also don’t have the squiggly line icon when in Notes.

  13. David M. Jellinek - 9 years ago

I am running 9.0 beta. If I “upgrade” to the 9.1beta, and then buy a 6S, presumably running 9.0, will I be able to restore to the 6S or will iOS view that as a downgrade and not allow it?
    thanks,
    dave

    • Mike Beasley - 9 years ago

It’ll probably be viewed as a downgrade. There should be a 9.1 beta for the 6s soon after the phone comes out though. Probably beta 2 will include support.

  14. Landy (@Soydepr) - 9 years ago

i have notice the iTunes is not registering the latest back up date to the cloud on my iOS 9 beta ? anyone

    • Mike Beasley - 9 years ago

iCloud backup didn’t work at all for me during the iOS 9 beta. At least not for the first few betas. Might have worked on the last one, but mostly it just failed. It works fine in GM.

  15. XGOLDHAWKX (@xGoldhawkx) - 9 years ago

It is a standard update for beta testers. I just updated my iPhone and iPad.

  16. Jamushroom (@Jamushroom) - 9 years ago

To anyone who wants to update to iOS 9.1 PB 1 and uses Whatsapp: This update currently breaks it.

  17. Eric Tatsumi - 9 years ago

Safari was nearly unusable for me on IOS 9 beta, now it is completely not usable at all in iOS 9.1. Just keeps crashing

  18. I noticed new settings for “Hey Siri” with iOS 9.1 public beta. Check out.

  19. Sebastian Viteri Noguera - 9 years ago

I am downloading iOS 9.1 right now. how easy will it be to get the official final version of iOS 9 when it gets released and how?? Thanks!!!

  20. Andres Cordova Melgar - 9 years ago

anyone knows how to stop an iOS update ?

  21. kjl3000 - 9 years ago

“Hey Siri” learns your voice now for user distinction! Problem one of two solved, now what about device distinction? (Two devices in one room, like iPhone and iPad)

  22. Does WhatsApp Web work with iOS 9? or iOS 9.1?

  23. Sam Watson (@Samw_22) - 9 years ago

on iPhone5s Beta works fine and so does whatsapp! has anyone noticed that settings does not have an image in multi tasking at the top now?

  24. Matt Hines - 9 years ago

iOS 9.1 Public Beta on iPad 2 feels much snappier than iOS 8.4 when I installed it last night. I’m hoping performance gets even better with the “app trimming”.

  25. Alejandro Lengua Vega - 9 years ago

What other advantages can we expect after upgrading to ios 9.1 Beta 1?

  26. Trevor James - 9 years ago

Updated to iOS 9.1 PB but it’s pretty buggy. AirPlay doesn’t work. Issues with viewing recent photos when sending them through an iMessage.

Does anyone know if I can easily roll back to 9.0 next Wednesday? I deleted the beta profile from settings. Is that all I need to do? Thanks.

  27. Mohamed Sharif - 9 years ago

super to use in my iphone 6…..

  28. Gigi Jimenez - 9 years ago

why doesnt it show up on my 5s? its says 9.0 and that its up to date

  29. Brandon Saunders - 9 years ago

I’m not sure if it’s iOS 9.1 or not but when I plug my iPhone in it begins charging and then a short time after it stops. Anyone else experiencing this issue?

  30. Alvydas Milius - 9 years ago

    Hi,
I just uninstall the beta profile under General>profiles
Delete update from Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage
Badges still is ON. Show that I have update.
