G-Technology and Seagate each announce new storage capacities of up 10TB

In what appears to be a simultaneous move today, both G-Technology and Seagate have announced upgrades to their storage device lineups bringing capacities up to 10TB each. Seagate today has introduced a new lineup of hard drives titled the Guardian Series, while G-Technology has decided to move towards upgrading their current portfolio’s max capacity.

Although separate, both companies expound on the growing needs of consumers for larger capacity drives in their lives. G-Technology’s vice president, Mike Williams says that, “By 2020, industry experts predict that the media and entertainment industry’s storage requirements will grow by nearly five times, and the average consumer will need an enormous 5.2TB of storage.”

The company goes on to give the classic example that some of our own writers and readers have given previously: recording “just 30 minutes of footage will take up to 11GB of space [on an Apple iPhone 6s].” Seeing these needs, G-Technology has upgraded the capacities in their current product line-up to 10TB.

The G-DRIVE USB and G-DRIVE Thunderbolt are now available for purchase in 10TB capacities, priced at $599.95 and $699.95 respectively. The G-RAID with Thunderbolt now provides transfer rates up to 480MB/s in RAID 0 and comes priced at $1,499.95 for 20TB.

The G-SPEED Shuttle XL with Thunderbolt and G-SPEED Studio XL with Thunderbolt are both available with enough storage for eight 10TB drives (80TB total) for $9,999.95 and $8,999.95 respectively. The ev Series Bay Adapter versions of both these products is available at $7,499.95 for 60TB for the G-SPEED Shuttle XL and $6,499.95 for the G-SPEED Studio XL.

The announcement of the increased hard drive capacities lead Seagate to announce a new lineup of products to fit with these larger storage spaces. Introducing the BarraCuda Pro, IronWolf,  and SkyHawk, Seagate is pushing each of these hard drives towards specific consumers depending on their needs. The BarraCuda Pro is an affordable desktop solution for those looking to dramatically increase their desktop’s storage capacities.

IronWolf is built more to keep up with the demands of a NAS system. Combining AgileArray (an intelligent caching architecture), rotational vibration sensors (to help against vibrations felt in multi-drive setups), RAID optimizations, and advanced power management, IronWolf is a solid fit for anyone with solid NAS needs.

SkyHawk puts a focus on being the best it can for surveillance systems where network video recording is a must. Using the same rotational vibration sensors as the IronWolf to help against read/write errors, SkyHawk supports up to 64 cameras recording to it at a time. Seagate states the system is ideal for “modern, hi-resolution systems running 24/7, even so far as including data recover services. The BarraCuda Pro is available for purchase from Amazon $534.19 with shipping estimates of two to four weeks.  IronWolf, and SkyHawk are not yet available for purchase on Seagate’s site at the time of this writing, but distributors for each can be found at their site.

HGST, a Western Digital company, will soon have 10TB 3.5 in drives available on Amazon for $831 + $10.81 shipping.
