Has Face ID on the iPhone X improved over time for you? [Poll]

The iPhone X has been available for almost exactly four months now, and that means users have had ample time to adjust to Face ID, Apple’s latest biometric technology. An interesting Reddit thread emerged this weekend where iPhone X users discussed whether or not Face ID has improved over time.

Has Face ID on the iPhone X improved over time for you?

Apple explains that Face ID is designed to adapt as your face changes and as it recognizes the times when the unlock fails and when it succeeds. By doing this, Face ID is able to learn more about you and, in some cases, improve over time.

Apple explains:

This data will be refined and updated as you use Face ID to improve your experience, including when you successfully authenticate. Face ID will also update this data when it detects a close match but a passcode is subsequently entered to unlock the device

Each time you unlock your iPhone X, the TrueDepth camera recognizes you by capturing accurate depth data and an infrared image. This information is matched against the stored mathematical representation to authenticate.

In the Reddit thread, however, iPhone X users report mixed real-world results as to whether Face ID improves over time. For instance, one user writes, “It’s actually the opposite for me, Face ID hasn’t been working as well.”

Some users complain that Face ID can be inconsistent in how often and in what situations it correctly works, even four months after release. One user says:

“Same here. It fails a lot, and it’s inconsistent when it does, so it’s frustrating waiting and not knowing every time if your phone is going to unlock or not.”

And another says unlock speeds are much slower than Touch ID:

“I would say 20-30% of daily scans fail for me. Other scans work, but are much slower than Touch ID. I’ve rescanned my face a few times and from a few different angles but that doesn’t make much of a difference.”

Many users, however, praise Face ID and give praise it to no end:

“I definitely noticed this. I’ve had mine since release and it can now recognize me in some weird positions that it couldn’t in the first couple of months.”

“Yep works great now for me. It took a few weeks, but can easily detect me if my face is partially covered or at a bit of an angle.”

“Mine works well and can detect me when I partially cover my face, as you say.”

What about you? Have you noticed Face ID improving over time? Let us know in the poll below and tell us more down in the comments!
