We heard news this week that Apple could bring three storage tiers to the 5.8- and 6.5-inch iPhones this year, with the top end offering 512GB. While we’ve heard that the base price of the OLED models could drop this year, the addition of an iPhone X Plus along with three storage tiers could definitely boost the devices’ average selling price. This will also likely mean the most expensive iPhones yet. How about you, would you spring for a 512GB model?
Rumors about a 512GB iPhone option popped up about this same time last year and almost 30% of 9to5Mac readers said “yes” or “probably” to the proposition of whether they’d pay a premium for 512GB of storage. However, the 2017 iPhone lineup ended up maxing out at 256GB.
Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted we could see this year’s 5.8-inch iPhone X successor start between $800-$900, and the 6.5-inch Plus model start between $900-$1,000. However, a $200 price drop might be a stretch.
If Apple does include 512GB options for the two OLED iPhones this year, we may be more likely to see a price structure like $899, $1,049, $1,199 for the 5.8-inch and $999, $1,149, $1,299 for the 6.5-inch. This would offer customers a more affordable entry point to the flagship iPhones, but could also increase the company’s ASP with five models at or above the iPhone X $999 base price.
As for why spending the extra cash on the huge 512GB storage capacity could be worth it, there are a variety of reasons. Shooting 4K video and burst-mode style photos certainly eat up space quickly. And users who prefer to steer away from cloud services (iCloud Photo Library, iCloud Music Library, etc.) may lean toward the 512GB option.
There are also users who just like knowing they’ll never have to think about storage and will pay more even if they’re not likely to come close to filling up their iPhone. While more users probably rely on iPad to download video content from YouTube, Netflix, etc., this could be another benefit to opting for a 512GB iPhone.
