Following the launch of the new M4 iMac and Mac mini, Apple has one more announcement today. In a press release, the company officially unveiled its new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup powered by the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.
The new MacBook Pro lineup is available to pre-order today, with availability beginning November 8.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new MacBook Pro lineup powered by M4 Pro and M4 Max. For more details on the M4 version, check out our dedicated post for that model.
Here’s what Apple has to say about the new MacBook Pro lineup:
Apple today unveiled the new MacBook Pro, powered by the M4 family of chips — M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max — delivering much faster performance and enhanced capabilities. The new MacBook Pro is built for Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system that transforms how users work, communicate, and express themselves, while protecting their privacy. Now available in space black and silver finishes, the 14-inch MacBook Pro includes the blazing-fast performance of M4 and three Thunderbolt 4 ports, starting with 16GB of memory, all at just $1,599.
The 14- and 16-inch models with M4 Pro and M4 Max offer Thunderbolt 5 for faster transfer speeds and advanced connectivity. All models include a Liquid Retina XDR display that gets even better with an all-new nano-texture display option and up to 1000 nits of brightness for SDR content, an advanced 12MP Center Stage camera, along with up to 24 hours of battery life, the longest ever in a Mac.
Display upgrades
The new MacBook Pro models offer a pair of notable improvements to the display. First, there’s a new nano-texture finish option. This option dramatically reduces glare and distractions while simultaneously preserving image quality.
Furthermore, Apple says that the new MacBook Pro can now show SDR content at up to 1000 nits and still displays HDR content at up to 1600 nits of peak brightness when in bright lighting conditions.
12MP Center Stage Camera
The new MacBook Pro models feature an upgraded 12MP Center Stage camera, which Apple says “delivers enhanced video quality in challenging lighting conditions.”
Center Stage support means you’ll always be centered in your video’s frame as you move around. There’s also support for Desk View, which uses the wide-angle lens to simultaneously show the user and a top-down view of their desk.
M4 Pro and M4 Max chips
The new high-end MacBook Pro models are available with either the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. There’s also a lower-end M4 version, which we’ve covered in depth in a separate article.
The M4 Pro chip features a powerful 14-core CPU with 10 performance cores and four efficiency cores paired with up to a 20-core GPU that is twice as powerful as M4.
The M4 Max chip features up to a 16-core CPU, up to a 40-core GPU, and over half a terabyte per second of unified memory bandwidth. There’s also support for up to 128GB of unified memory. The base configuration of the chip has 14 CPU and 32 GPU cores, while a $300 upgrade unlocks the full 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU support.
Apple touts that the M4 Max chip is the fastest laptop chip in the world. Its testing shows that CPU and GPU performance are both 1.2x faster than last year’s M3 Max.
Connectivity
The new M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro models feature Thunderbolt 5 support across all three of their USB-C ports. Thunderbolt 5 more than doubles transfer speeds up to 120 Gb/s for faster external storage, docking and hubs, and more.
There’s also an HDMI port across all MacBook Pro models with support for up to 8K resolution, an SDXC card slot, and MagSafe 3 for charging. Just like the previous generation models, there’s also support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

The good thing about Apple silicone is that any desktop or laptop with them will remain plenty powerful for years to come. You no longer have to have FOMO with needing to upgrade every few years. An M1 machine is still a very relevant and capable machine and will be for many more years to come. I bought an M3 Pro MacBook Pro a few months back and I'm pretty confident that I'll get at least 5 to 6 good years out of it.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro powered by M4 Pro starts at $2,499 and also now comes with 24GB of RAM paired with 512GB of storage.
The new MacBook Pro lineup is available to pre-order today with the first orders slated to arrive on November 8.
