Apple’s Passwords app now has a Firefox extension for Mac

Apple’s new Passwords app debuted this fall as a dedicated home for passwords across every device. Browsers, however, have been hit or miss with built-in Passwords support. Fortunately, there’s a big one that just gained it: Apple now offers an official Passwords extension in Firefox for Mac.

Firefox extension creates more seamless Passwords experience

For years, Apple has offered an iCloud Keychain feature to store and manage passwords inside the Settings app across its devices.

This fall, however, the company launched a dedicated Passwords app in iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, visionOS 2, and more. The goal was to make Passwords available anywhere and everywhere you might need it.

If you were a Firefox user, though, the experience was a little clunky. You could access the Passwords app itself on macOS, or use its Menu Bar app, but there was no direct integration inside Firefox.

That’s officially changed, as Apple has now made an ‘iCloud Passwords’ extension available for Mac Firefox users. Here’s the description:

iCloud Passwords lets you securely fill passwords from iCloud Keychain when signing in to websites using Firefox. Any new passwords you create in Firefox are saved to your iCloud Keychain so that they are also available across your Apple devices. The extension can also generate verification codes, which you can set up by right-clicking on a QR code.

Origins of the Apple Passwords extension for Firefox

Interestingly, a Reddit thread reveals that this extension appears to have been created by a third-party developer. It has existed before now under their ownership. Only recently, however, Apple seems to have taken ownership and now publishes the extension with its name and branding.

There’s no Windows compatible version yet, but hopefully that will come later.

In any case, getting access to all your stored passwords directly in Firefox will make for a more seamless browsing experience.
