These are the iPhone’s most downloaded App Store apps of the year

Apple has revealed the most downloaded App Store apps and games of 2024. Its top charts are localized for many parts of the world, so you can see the most popular downloads in your own country. Here are the top apps and games of the year.

Apple reveals top apps and games of 2024 for iPhone and iPad

The App Store on iPhone and iPad now has a new story on the Today tab.

That story is called ‘Get the USA’s Top Apps of 2024’ (it will differ depending on where you’re located).

Apple explains:

As 2024 comes to a close, Apple is excited to unveil the most downloaded apps and games of the year across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Arcade, with charts localized for users in more than 30 countries and regions. Now available on the App Store’s Today tab, the year-end charts include the top free and paid apps and games, as well as the top Apple Arcade games. Users can also discover the 2024 App Store Award winners, 17 exceptional apps and games selected by App Store Editors that helped users ignite their creativity, achieve new milestones, and cherish everyday moments with family and friends across the App Store and the Apple ecosystem.

You can find top charts for three categories:

It’s not explicitly stated that the lists are organized from most downloaded to least, but that appears to be the case. As a result, in the US the top free apps of the year are:

  1. Temu
  2. Threads
  3. TikTok
  4. ChatGPT
  5. Google

You can find the full list here or inside the App Store’s Today tab.

The top free games are:

  1. Block Blast!
  2. MONOPOLY GO!
  3. Roblox
  4. Call of Duty: Warzone
  5. Township

More top titles are available here.

9to5Mac’s Take

Free apps and games continue to, by far, dominate App Store downloads. That’s clear when you look at the lists of paid apps and games, which mostly consist of years-old titles. There’s not a lot of activity happening in the paid up front category.

That said, browsing the free top charts especially provides an interesting glimpse into the shifting trends and winners and losers of 2024’s app year.

What do you think of the top charts? Any surprises? Let us know in the comments.
