X drops support for installing its iPad app on the Mac

Last year, X (formerly known as Twitter) killed its dedicated Mac app and removed it from the Mac App Store. At the time, the company pointed users to the iPad version of the app, which remained available on the Mac App Store for Apple Silicon users to install.

Now, however, X is blocking users from installing the iPad version of the app on macOS. The essentially means the company has ditched the Mac entirely.

As a refresher, one of the many benefits of Apple Silicon is that you can run iPhone and iPad apps right on your Mac. Developers, however, have the ability to opt out and block you from doing this. That is what X is doing.

As spotted by multiple users on the platform, the Mac App Store listing for the iPad version of X now says the app is not supported on the Mac.

The iPad version of the X app had been gradually falling apart. The search functionality is completely broken. Opening links in the X app almost exclusively shows you an error message: “Uh oh, an error was encountered.”

If you have the X iPad app installed on your Mac, you can continue to use it (or at least use the parts that work) for now. Unfortunately, to get full functionality out of the platform, you’ll have to use the web version in a browser like Safari or Chrome.

The most logical solution is to stop using X.

Search out your news from reliable sources you trust — not from an attention seeking algorithm designed to tell you only that which will keep you on that platform.

Furthermore, en masse, losing Mac users would certainly have an impact on the platform’s value. If they don’t want you, why should you want them.

Abandoning the Mac altogether (while also killing third-party Mac apps) is just one of many shortsighted decisions made under the current leadership of X.

It’s possible X disabled the Mac support for the iPad app while it fixes some of the aforementioned bugs. For now, however, that’s just speculation.
