Latest Intel chips beat Apple’s M5 in multi-core scores – for maybe two days

Two laptops with the latest Intel chips have beaten out the MacBook Pro with M5 chip – but it’s already clear that this will be an extremely short-lived victory.

Benchmark results show impressive multi-core scores for the new Intel Core Ultra Series 3 in laptops from MSI and Lenovo …

Wired’s Luke Larsen carried out the tests.

I tested two laptops with the new Intel Core Ultra Series 3 line of chips, both on the higher-end of the spectrum: the Intel Core Ultra X7 358H in the MSI Prestige 14 Flip and the Core Ultra X9 388H in a 16-inch Lenovo IdeaPad reference unit.

He then shared the results of benchmark tests with the Intel chips coming out ahead. The Intel chips came out ahead in two out of the three.

In the Cinebench 24 multi-core benchmark, the highest score was achieved by the Core Ultra X9 388H, which came in at 1285 against the M5’s 922. In the 3DMark Steel Nomad Light test, the same Intel chip hit 5883 against the M5’s 5077.

The same tests, however, make it clear that Intel shouldn’t be breaking out the champagne. Its latest chips are easily beaten by the Apple M4 Pro, and will clearly be left in the dust by the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips we’re expecting to see launched in the new MacBook Pro models, perhaps as soon as Wednesday.

Extrapolating from the improvements seen between the M4 and its beefier brothers suggests that the M5 Max MacBook Pro is likely to deliver “astounding” Geekbench scores.
