Here’s the good news and bad news on upgrading to the AirTag 2

Apple yesterday announced the AirTag 2, the first update to its standalone location-tracking device. It offers improved Precision Finding, a longer Bluetooth range, and a louder speaker.

Whether or not the improvements justify replacing any of your existing AirTags is a judgment call, but there’s a mix of good news and bad if you are considering it …

The good news is we confirmed the new model has exactly the same dimensions as the original, meaning that it will fit any of your existing accessories. This is a pleasant contrast to Apple’s habit of making enough minor changes to the form factor of an incremental iPhone update to ensure that you need to buy a new case for it.

Indeed, the physical difference between the two models is so subtle that you literally have to check the small print when buying one from a third-party source.

The bad news is that you still require an accessory if you want to use one on a keyring or similar. The company hasn’t implemented the most requested improvement: a small hole to allow it to be directly attached to a keyring without the need for a holder.

Admittedly, there are very inexpensive options, but it’s still bulkier than allowing us to simply attach an AirTag directly.

Personally, I would also like to have seen Apple introduce a new form factor. We haven’t quite reached a world where we can completely forego physical payment and access cards, but for years now my only wallet has been the MagSafe wallet attached to my iPhone.

Because there’s always the risk of the wallet becoming detached from our phone, I would love it if Apple could make a version of this with built-in Find My capabilities, even at the cost of being a bit thicker to accommodate the tech.
