This fall Apple has three flagship iPhones rumored to launch: iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold. Per the latest reporting, there are two rumored camera advantages Apple’s Pro line will have over the foldable.
Fall iPhone lineup will offer two main choices: Pro or Fold
Rumors indicate Apple has some big shakeups in store for future iPhone lineups, with this fall being a prime example of that.
For starters, the iPhone 18 isn’t expected to launch until early 2027. And reports are unclear regarding launch timing for the iPhone Air successor.
Right now, it looks like Apple’s fall iPhone lineup will be its smallest in years:
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- iPhone Fold
Since Pro and Pro Max models tend to differ only in size, that means users will actually have two main choices: Pro or Fold. And in that decision process, camera features will likely be influential.
Per the latest rumors, there are two key camera advantages the iPhone 18 Pro will have.

When it comes to cameras, iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to offer at least two upgrades over the iPhone 17 Pro:
- Main camera is gaining variable aperture
- Telephoto camera will have a wider aperture
It’s likely Apple has other surprises in store too, but these are the main rumors so far.
What about the iPhone Fold?
Even though the foldable should largely have a very comparable Main camera to the Pro line, the addition of variable aperture is currently expected to be Pro-exclusive.
And the iPhone Fold will lack a Telephoto lens completely. Its two rear cameras are rumored to be Main and Ultra Wide.
So while iPhone Fold users will miss out on a Telephoto camera, iPhone 18 Pro users will get an even better Telephoto lens thanks to its wider aperture.
The amount these features might sway a purchase decision will vary depending on your specific needs. However, as an iPhone Air user who sometimes second-guesses skipping the iPhone 17 Pro, it certainly will factor into my decision this fall.
