WhatsApp Plus subscriptions rolling out to iPhone, but you probably don’t need one

A paid WhatsApp Plus subscription went live in the Android beta last month and it is now slowly rolling out to iPhone users.

It’s just gone live for a small number of iOS users and is reportedly rolling out to more accounts over the next few weeks …

WABetaInfo shared the news.

WhatsApp Plus is a subscription plan now available to a limited number of iOS users […] and it is rolling out to more accounts over the coming weeks.

It doesn’t yet appear to be available in the US. European pricing is €2.49 per month, suggesting that it will cost somewhere in the $2.49 to $2.99 range when it goes live in the USA.

The good news is that all existing WhatsApp messaging functionality remains available in the free app. The additional features you get in WhatsApp Plus are:

  • Send premium stickers
  • Choose a custom app icon
  • Change your app’s theme
  • Get premium ringtones
  • Upgrade your lists
  • Pin extra chats

The most practical of the upgrades is the ability to pin up to 20 chats rather than the three you get as standard. WABetaInfo also gives an example of what you get from the upgraded List features.

For users who subscribe, WhatsApp will introduce new tools that make it possible to manage multiple chats at the same time through these lists. For example, if a subscriber creates a list that contains all their work colleagues, they can apply a single chat theme to all included conversations with one selection. Users can also set a shared alert tone for messages and a unified ringtone for calls. This allows subscribers to keep consistent settings for the same chat list.

The premium stickers include animated overlay effects. Only paid subscribers can use them, but free users will still see them.
