WhatsApp channel admins will soon get the ability to flag AI-generated media

As the EU’s new transparency requirements for AI-generated content take effect, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow channel admins to label certain types of AI-generated content. Here are the details.

’Channel admins in your country are required to label channel updates that use AI content’

As spotted by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow channel admins to label certain types of content as AI-generated.

References to the new feature are currently found in WhatsApp’s latest Android beta, but since it appears to be a response to country-specific regulatory requirements, an iOS version and broader rollout are likely to follow.

According to the report, the new feature will follow the same process used when channel admins run sponsored content:

After sharing an update that contains AI-generated media, the admin can tap and hold the message to open the context menu. Here, there will be a new option called “Add AI content label”. This action adds a visible label to the message bubble, so followers can immediately see that the media was generated using artificial intelligence. After adding the AI label, users may not be able to remove it.

WABetaInfo notes that not all AI-generated content will necessarily require labeling. As the current splash screen describes, AI content includes images, videos, or other media created or edited using AI tools.

In other words, it appears that admins will not be required to label AI-generated text. It is currently unclear whether this option will be released worldwide or made available only where this type of labeling is required by law.
