Apple started informing developers today that universal macOS apps on the Mac App Store that require macOS 13 or later can now drop support for Intel-based Macs.
In the email, Apple says:
We’re reaching out to let you know that universal macOS apps on the Mac App Store that require macOS 13 or later can now remove support for Intel-based Mac computers.
By removing support for Intel-based Mac computers, you can simplify your development and optimize your download and on-device size.
To remove Intel support, update your app build settings to “arm64” only. Then rebuild and submit your app to the Mac App Store.

It has been 6 years since the first M1 Macs and the last Intel Mac Pro (from 2019) was discontinued in 2023. So it's probably about time. I remember the last transition when PowerPC apps were dumped in 2011 when Rosetta 1 died with 10.7 Lion. However, I'm sure there's a lot more apps about to die forever from the Intel era than the PowerPC era. RIP to those apps.
Previously, developers were required to offer Intel compatibility. With today’s change, developers can drop support for Intel-based Macs. Intel users, however, can continue using the last version of the app compatible with their machine.
The changes come as macOS 27 Golden Gate drops support for Intel-powered Macs altogether. Apple also announced last year that Rosetta 2, the software that translates Intel apps for Apple Silicon, will be discontinued after macOS 27 (with some exceptions for for certain games).
