AirParrot 2 brings Mac & Windows screen mirroring to Chromecast, drag and drop media streaming

AirParrot, the app that lets you send your desktop display to an Apple TV-connected TV, is today releasing version 2 with Chromecast support and number of other new features. Sure, you can mirror your Mac’s display to an Apple TV using Apple’s built-in AirPlay feature, but AirParrot provides features beyond what Apple offers and also support for screen mirroring from Chromebooks and Windows. Today’s release makes it the first to enable full screen mirroring support to Chromecast with audio support and more.

Version 2 of AirParrot, available starting today, brings support for screen mirroring to Chromecast, something that was previously only available as an experimental (and buggy) feature of Google’s Chrome plugin for Chromecast. AirParrot is technically the first app to enable full support (including audio) and won’t require you to run Chrome.

The new app is also turning AirParrot into a media server as well enabling drag and drop streaming of video or audio to AirPlay-enabled devices, Chromecast, and the company’s own Reflector AirPlay receiver. “The ability to stream video files adds an entirely new element to the former mirroring-only application. Users can now drag and drop their favorite movies, TV shows and other media files to begin streaming. When available, home theater users will enjoy 5.1 channel audio.”

The release also includes a number of other new features including support for sending content to multiple destinations, a refreshed UI, and support for discovering devices over Bluetooth.

AirParrot 2 is available for $14.99 for new users and a $9.99 paid upgrade for existing users.

Apple TV recently died. What kind of solutions are there for IOS? I would love to mirror my iPhone screen without JB. Thinking about getting a 2 pack of chrome cast sticks that would be cheaper than a new ATV.

AirServer would work. It’s Mac software that does mirroring. You could then go from a laptop to the tv. At that point you’d probably be better off just using the laptop to tv, but this would work non the less as an ios mirror to your tv.

I will try it out with EyeTV. I have an older Mac as a media server and AirPlay video is not available. Air Parrot works well for most apps but not EyeTV, which has severe lip sync problems. Maybe Air Parrot 2 overcomes this?
It would be good to have free-to air digital TV working on my Apple TV setup (tv on Apple TV!) I know there are some direct streaming solutions but EyeTV works so well on the iMac.

My computing platforms are MS-Windows 7/8.1 PCs, a MacBook Pro under Yosemite and an iPhone 6 Plus. Do I have to have Apple TV or is the Google Chromecast device, enough, to mirror the screens of these platforms on an HD TV that has an HDMI port; by running Air Parrot? I also have an 802.11 N WiFi router, and have exposure to Chromecast and Apple TV at friend’s places.

The bottom line is what are the hardware requirements, to mirror all these platforms on my HD TV? I am comfortable with connecting these platforms with various physical cables & dongles, through the HDMI port of my TV. Thanks in advance!

  6. AirParrot,an awesome app for screen sharing. Will surely look into it. Currently am using Prijector for screen mirroring and no doubt it works perfectly ,fulfilling all my demands.
