Google today released an update for its iOS mapping application. The latest build, version 4.2.0, allows users to filter their restaurant searches by the type of food offered, get global weather reports, and add transit directions to your phone’s calendar. You can also add pins to the origin and destination during navigation.
There are, of course, other miscellaneous “bug fixes” that have been applied. The free update is available from the iOS App Store.
What’s New in Version 4.2.0
• Filter searches for restaurants by cuisine type
• See current weather information for cities around the world
• Drop a pin for your starting and destination points in directions and navigation
• Add transit directions to your calendar
• Bug fixes

Sadly Google Maps is still light years ahead of Apple Maps. I pretty much use it exclusively on my iPhone these days.
Agreed. I only wish they (Apple) would allow Google Maps to show progress on a locked screen and allow us to rename locations on our iPhone.
I still prefer the design language of Apple Maps, night mode, full-screen view and starting a navigation is only one tap compared to Google Maps.
With that said there’s a lot to love about Google Maps and I’m sure I’d have a different opinion if I used public transportation, then again there’s a lot of apps that do just as good if not a better job of helping you get around on busses, trains or finding bike lanes/trails.
I for one try not to use any maps application and instead try to learn my city as best I can so I’m not reliant on technology that I can’t find my way home without it. It’s like reading sheet music. At some point you should just know how to play.
The good news us iPhone users have a choice.
Same here, the only thing Apple maps has on Google maps is the night mode.
