During its Q4 2015 earnings call today, Tim Cook revealed the first numbers for its new Apple News service saying that the app has around 40 million users since launching alongside iOS 9 in September.
Apple didn’t specify exactly where it’s pulling that data from. It’s possible a user could mean everyone that’s ever opened the app, or it could be using some other arbitrary way of measuring, like those that have used the app in the past week, as it has done with Apple Music. The company revealed numbers for that service for the first time earlier this month when it announced it has 15 million user accounts and 6.5 million paid subscribers.
Cook also noted during today’s call that Apple News has now expanded outside of the US with the recent release of iOS 9.1 that brought the service to the UK and Australia.
Apple News replaces Apple’s old Newsstand app in iOS 9, but it attempts to introduce a new platform by combining an aggregation service using a wide variety of online news sources with curation by human editors and tools for publishers to create content specifically for the service.

I don’t really use Apple news as my main news source, but it is convenient to scroll left from the home screen and see a few trending or relevant stories.
Well, I can’t uninstall it and tried it out when it was release so yes, I have used it. After that first day, I no longer use it and will look for a way to disable it again.
It’s a good start, I like it.. but it has a ways to go. I can still find more varied sources on Flipboard and I’m not a fan of how about half the articles require me to leave the app to keep reading.

After a little tweaking, it’s been great.
I find the lack of Google and Android news in the this App unsettling. You can’t trust one “curated” source.

Or search for Android and ad that.
Or add specific news sources that tend to cover Google and Android (e.g. The Verge, Engadget, etc).
Love the News app, but agree it still needs some improvements. Hopefully this means it’ll get some attention during the next software update.

I’m actually having a great time with Apple news. It’s gained its position on my home screen, flipboard has gone to the last screen. I’m sure over time it’ll get stronger, better and more faster. Rather than diving into multiple apps to read specific tech news, can get it all in one place now, and for me that’s a big deal.
