Apple updates iMovie for Mac with navigation & visual improvements, more

Apple today is rolling out a small update to its iMovie video editing software on the Mac. The update bumps the app to version 10.1.2 and follows an update that fixed YouTube sharing bugs and improved stability. Today’s update includes a couple of changes that improve navigation, as well as your standard bug fixes and stability improvements.

First off, Apple has made it easier to find the “New Project” button in the Projects browser and has also introduced something it is calling “fast project creation” to easily begin editing footage with a single click. Additionally, if you click a single video clip, the entire clip is now selected, whereas previously only a range of it was selected. There’s also a new keyboard shortcut for selecting the range of a clip in the browser and timeline. You can now simply hold down the R key while dragging to do so.

Finally, the update includes larger project thumbnails that better match that of iMovie on iOS and adds support for App Preview resolutions for iPad Pro and Apple TV.

The update is available on the Mac App Store now and the full changelog can be seen below:

What’s New in Version 10.1.2

• Easy to find New Project button in the Projects browser
• Larger project thumbnails that match the look of iMovie for iOS
• Fast project creation lets you begin editing with a single click
• Clicking a video clip selects the entire clip, instead of a range
• Keyboard shortcut to select range within a clip in the browser and timeline (hold down R key while dragging)
• Support for App Preview resolutions for iPad Pro (1600 x 1200) and Apple TV (1920 x 1080)
• Improves stability

“Apple doesn’t update its apps anymore. They put out a major release, maybe one bug fix, then abandon them until the next major release years later.” – Scared podcasters.

    • Can it upload something longer than 10 min yet? Or does it still think that YouTube still has the old limit from years ago?

YouTube DOES still have the old limit from years ago… for new accounts, struck accounts, and unverified email accounts. It’s not Apple’s fault their app can’t tell what privileges your account has, that would be something that the YouTube API would be responsible for. And lately Googlebet has been showing waning interest in Apple’s platforms.

Further evidence that it’s not the origin but rather the destination, I can upload pretty much anything to Vimeo without problems. In fact, doing an upload through the app is more reliable for me than using their web interface. And faster for some reason.
