Squirrel relaunched as Yahoo Together, a Slack-like chat app for family and friends

When Yahoo Messenger shut down in the summer, the company pointed users to a new group messaging app, Squirrel. This has today been rebranded as Yahoo Together, and is essentially a Slack lookalike aimed at family members and groups of friends …

Squirrel was launched as a private beta, but Yahoo Together is available to everyone from today.

Squirrel is now Yahoo Together and is open to all, no invite codes needed! Based on feedback from our early adopters (shout out to you all for helping us shape the product), we’ve updated the design to make it easier to use and more useful for you. We’ve also added some new features, like smart reminders, so now you can tap any message to set a scheduled automatic reminder for the group.

The app is based around topics (or channels, in Slack parlance), and appears mostly intended as a tools to plan and organize things together.

Get your family, team, cause or crew together. Yahoo Together is the group messaging app that actually makes it easy to get organized, make plans and have fun while you’re at it. Fully loaded with features like reminders, custom reactions and a handy mute button!

The app also offers private channels, aka Secret Topics, for things like planning surprise parties; group reminders; custom reactions, using selfies; mentions; blasts – to ensure everyone sees a message; and the ability to mute notifications for topics that don’t interest you.

The app allows you to upload photos and documents, as well as supporting links.

Yahoo Together supports Siri Shortcuts, and is a free download from the App Store. Check out the video below for an overview – but how well it will take off is anyone’s guess at this point. Many still haven’t forgotten that all three billion Yahoo accounts were hacked back in 2013, and that it took the company four years to realize it …
