Apple confirms Black Friday event, online and in retail stores

Apple has confirmed that it will be offering Black Friday deals in the online store as well as in retail stores. For the online store, the special pricing will be available from midnight to midnight.

Apple hasn’t revealed what the savings will be, but last year offered $100 off MacBooks as well as smaller discounts on iPads, iPods and a range of other products. The promo also says that shipping is free without the usual minimum spend caveat (usually $50 in the US).

As ever, we expect bigger discounts from third-party retailers, and we’ll keep you updated on the best deals over on 9to5toys …

Apple Store visits continue to climb, though growth flattening

Asymco’s Horace Dediu has put together a couple of charts showing that while the number of visitors to Apple’s retail stores continues to climb, the rate of growth is flattening off.

The underlying reason appears to be a slow-down in the rate at which Apple is opening new stores, as the average number of visitors per store has remained stable for the past three years …

Apple faces new class action lawsuit from store employees over unpaid time waiting in line

Law360 (via BI)  reports that Apple is facing a second class action lawsuit filed on behalf of hourly-paid Apple Store employees who have to spend 10-15 minutes daily in unpaid time waiting in line to clock-in and for security checks when leaving the store.

Plaintiff and other Hourly Employees were and are required to wait in line for security checks for at least 10-15 minutes each day before leaving for their meal breaks and at the end of their shift after they had already clocked out. This daily 10-15 minute uncompensated waiting time during security checks was done in order to undergo searches for possible contraband and/or pilferage of inventory.

The claim argues that the time should be on the clock. Amazon is facing similar claims.

Two other Apple Store employees had previously filed a similar action, later expanded to a class action, though it doesn’t appear to have gathered much support. A class action is a lawsuit which anyone in the same position can join, and which could potentially leave Apple with a compensation bill for all hourly-paid store employees. Apple employs more than 40,000 staff worldwide in its retail stores, though it’s not known how many of them would qualify to join the claim.

Apple Stores are the most profitable retail spaces in the U.S., earning over $6,000 per square foot each year and beating even Tiffany and Harrods. We ran an insiders’ view of life as Apple Store staff back in March.

Apple Store Bellevue flooded after heavy rain (photo)

Fox reports that the Apple Store in Bellevue was one of more than a dozen stores flooded in the Bellevue Square Mall after heavy rain.

And at least 14 stores at the Southcenter Mall in Tukwila had minor flood damage when the storm drains could not handle all the water, the Tukwila Fire Department said.

There were no injuries. Damage estimates were not immediately available.

A clean-up operation is in progress, and the mall is expected to be open normally today.

Apple Store suffers partial outages due to server issues

The online Apple Store in the UK, Germany, US and likely other countries suffered some partial outages when the Content Delivery Network (CDN) system failed, resulting in missing images and page design elements.

A CDN is a network of local servers distributed around the world which are used to serve static elements of a website. Instead of a single server in California delivering a photo to a website visitor in Germany, for example, the main website sends an instruction to a German server to display the photo. If the CDN fails, then missing images, CSS elements and Javascript mean that the page design is lost and only the bare content is shown.

As of this morning, all the sites we’ve tried appear to be working properly again.

Berlin Apple Store opening on Friday 3rd May

Apple’s first store in the German capital Berlin is opening at the unusual time of 5pm on Friday 3rd May. (If you’re confused by the graphic, European dates have the day before the month.)

The graphic has a small play on words, Kurfürstendamm being the area of Berlin in which the store is opening, and the highlighted text reading ‘Apple for Berlin’.

This brings the total number of Apple Stores in Germany to 11. We previously showed some photos and videos of the store preparation here.

Apple’s first store in Berlin looks set to open the first weekend in May, reports German site iFun.

iFun posted photos showing the scaffolding coming down, and says that much of the interior is in place, with employee briefings pointing to the 4th May opening.

The site has previously posted very amateurish video of the interior before the furniture was installed. You may wish to mute your speakers before playing it …

Police arrest Polish gypsy crime ring targeting Apple/electronics stores responsible for $3M in loot

SiliconValley.com reported police in Torrance, Calif. have arrested four suspects claiming to be part of a “Gypsy family” from Poland that is responsible for targeting Apple retail stores and other electronics retailers across the country. The group is accused of stealing around $3 million in property over the last year, and police have so far recovered more than $20,000 worth of Apple products:

The suspected thieves arrested March 8 in Hawthorne are believed responsible for 17 crimes at Apple (AAPL) stores in Manhattan Beach, Pasadena, Canoga Park, Glendale, Brea, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and Irvine, along with a MacMall in Torrance, a Microsoft store in Mission Viejo, and other businesses across Los Angeles and Orange counties, including Best Buy, Costco, PetSmart, Sam’s Club, Sports Authority and Wal-Mart, Torrance police Sgt. Robert Watt said.

During the crime and others like it, the men would stand in a position to block employees from seeing the women behind them. The men selected items from shelves and passed it to the women, who would hide it inside their oversized dresses and overcoats, and purses, Watt said.

Once the suspects were arrested, police recovered more than $20,000 worth of Apple products, Watt said.

Apple to open first store in Alaska, five worldwide, on Saturday

Saturday, Apple will open its first Apple Store in the great state of Alaska which will be by far the most northernApple Store on the planet. It will be located on 320 West 5th Avenue (in the 5th Avenue Mall) in Anchorage, and doors open at 10 A.M.

You’d think this would make for an Apple Store in every state, but there are still seven (Arkansas, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming) without according to this map (thanks commenters).

Along with a store in Alaska, Apple will unveil four other stores worldwide Saturday:

Anchorage 5th Avenue Mall (Anchorage, Alaska)

Fashion Place (Murray, Utah)

Southland (Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia)

Conestoga: (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada)

I Gigli: (Florence, Italy)
