Back in March, when the latest installment in the popular BioShock franchise was released on consoles, Mac gaming heavyweights Aspyr announced they would be bringing the game to Mac this summer. Today it has finally announced an official release date for BioShock Infinite, as well as details on pre-order bonuses, DLC, and SteamPlay support.

BioShock Infinite for Mac will officially become available starting August 29th and, yes, the title will support SteamPlay, allowing users to purchase the game once and play on both PC and Mac through Steam. It will also be available on the Mac App Store. However, Aspyr’s own distribution service, GameAgent, is offering some pretty enticing pre-order bonuses if you pick up the title through them.

Not only will pre-orders through GameAgent get you the “Columbia’s Finest DLC,” but Aspyr is also promising an extra 20% off the $59.99 price tag for GameAgent customers. The “Clash in the Clouds” DLC will be available to purchase at launch, and plans are in place to support any additional DLC for the title following its release.

You might have noticed that Mac versions of many big games have been arriving a lot sooner after their initial release than in the past. For that we have Aspyr to thank, the company that ports the majority of big titles that eventually end up available for OS X. Earlier this year we sat down with Aspyr to talk about the process of porting games to Mac:

Civilization V was within 2 months, Borderlands 2 was within 2 months, Duke Nukem Forever was within weeks, Rage within 2 months, and we released the Civilization V: Gods and Kings expansion day-and-date worldwide on both Steam and the Mac App Store. I’m proud of how we’ve been able to respond with timely Mac versions despite growing difficulties technically. If it’s a common goal of the developer, license holder and Aspyr, then shipping simultaneously is an option.

GameAgent has posted an FAQ on its website.

System requirements include:

  • Operating System: OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion) or later
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
  • Numbers of cores: 2
  • Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
  • Memory: 4 GB
  • Hard Disk Space: 30 MB
  • Video Card: Nvidia GeForce 640M, Radeon HD 3870, Intel HD 4000, or better with 512 MB of Video Memory

  1. great game, i played two times and doesnt stop blow your mind

  2. Any way to play mac games with a controller?

    • Jordan Kahn says:

Yep. Here’s Aspyr’s response: “Yes, BioShock Infinite for Mac supports the Microsoft Xbox 360 wired gamepad as well as the PlayStation 3 Dualshock 3 Wireless Controller.”

  3. I think “For that we have Aspyr to thank, the company that ports the majority of big titles that eventually end up available for OS X” may be doing Feral out of a pretty big chunk of credit.

    • Jordan Kahn says:

Feral Interactive makes a lot of great Mac games too. But Aspyr has been getting the games to market a lot quicker after initial releases, I was just pointing that out.

  4. Joel Senders says:

I think Jordan answered your question Christiano, but you may be interested in the app Controllermate. You can use a controller for ANY game that utilizes the keyboard or mouse using Controllermate by mapping the keyboard keys to specific buttons on your controller. There is a little bit of learning, but it has paid off for me as I can play all of my emulators, DOS ports and older titles on my Mac with just one controller.

  5. Derek Paul says:

So, if we already own the game on Steam, will the Mac Steamplay support automatically be added to the game?

    • Jordan Kahn says:

Ya. If you bought the PC version of the game from Steam you’ll get the Mac version for free when it’s released. That goes for any copy of BioShock Infinite purchased through anywhere other than the Mac App Store (which is the only place you won’t get the “SteamPlay” version).
