Next iPhone reportedly sports a larger screen and sapphire crystal display

Apple-iPhone-6-concept

Apple is preparing to release not one, but two new versions of the iPhone in September, according to the South China Morning Post. Each version will ship with a larger display than the iPhone 5s, coming in at a whopping 4.7″ and 5.5″, respectively. The displays are said to have a pixel density of 441ppi, much higher than the current 326ppi found in the iPhone 5 and later.

The report also states that both displays will be made from sapphire crystal, which fits with recent reports that Apple is planning to have its latest sapphire plant in Mesa, AZ operational in February for a “critical” product component. The displays will also be flat, not curved, the Post says.

Finally, the report indicates that the iPhone 5c will be removed from the lineup when the iPhone 6 is released, while the 5s will stick around but be made from cheaper materials.

    I’m I in a time machine. Wasn’t this reported 2 months ago?

  2. robertvarga79 - 10 years ago

It is also the time to refresh the iPhone, will do much good for!

  3. rettun1 - 10 years ago

“while the 5s will stick around but be made from cheaper materials”

Huh? I think this requires a little explanation.

    • acslater017 - 10 years ago

I assume this means the current materials (e.g. Gorilla Glass rather than sapphire).

      • Love Harris - 10 years ago

No. It likely means that the iPhone 5s will be receive an iPhone 5c make-over to make it easier to produce while the iPhone 6 is in production.

    • I think they might mean iPhone 5S specs in a plastic housing? I don’t know much about the iPhone 5c in terms of sales/popularity/customer acceptance – but this would certainly lower costs. When Apple originally released the iPhone 5c I was expecting them to put the iPhone 5 in a plastic housing and was surprised when they didn’t. I think they might start doing that this time around. It’s hard to sell the 5c when people really want the 5s. I also think the 5c was costing too much to make, not generating enough profit for the hit to their image of ‘exclusive and cool.’

      • rettun1 - 10 years ago

I’d think it would cost less to just keep the 5s around, as opposed to changing the manufacturing processes and whatnot. I could be wrong tho

    • @Dylan

“When Apple originally released the iPhone 5c I was expecting them to put the iPhone 5 in a plastic housing and was surprised when they didn’t.”

You do realize the iPhone 5c IS an iPhone 5 in a plastic housing, right?

    • Mike Beasley - 10 years ago

Unfortunately the source doesn’t seem to have much more information than that right now. I’m quite curious what it could mean as well. Lower-quality glass perhaps? Not sure a plastic housing would make sense given that the 5c will be discontinued, but maybe.

      • Alex (@Metascover) - 10 years ago

Why would they stop the plastic phone? The 5C sold more than the 4S did in previous years, and with better margin for Apple. They have no reason to stop making new lower-cost phones. They are probably going to release a 6C alongside the 6 that is just a 5S in plastic.

      • rogifan - 10 years ago

This report makes no sense. Why would Apple make such a huge jump in screen size on their flagship device? They sold 51M phones last quarter so obviously not everyone wants a phablet like device. Going from 4″ to nearly 5″ would alienate a lot of people IMO. This report also says the 5C is going to be discontinued but the 5S will stick around but using cheaper materials. Well then it’s not the 5S is it? Sounds to me like its the 5C with 5S internals.

Another thing that makes me very skeptical is increasing the screen size that much plus using sapphire for the display certainly would make these devices more expensive than the current flagship. I can’t see Apple replacing their flagship device with two new devices that are both more expensive. When’s the last time Apple increased the price of the iPhone?

      • Kevin Peterson - 10 years ago

The screen size does make perfect sense. I use to have a iphone and i now have the note 3. I would never go back to ios or a small screen size. 5″ or bigger would be perfect. Mine fits in my pocket just fine. I left ios but wil never leave my Mac.

      • weakguy - 10 years ago

        Maybe it’s called iPhone 5cs or 5sc? Eww….

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

        >>the 5c will be discontinued

        Total nonsense.

  4. T.Hojberg (@tHoj101) - 10 years ago

Didn’t you guys just have a report – this morning, even using the same iPhone graphic – saying that the sapphire wasn’t going to be used in the new iPhone? I think your ‘report(s)’ are flinging shit at a fan.

    • The article your referencing is here: http://9to5mac.com/2014/02/11/double-debunk-bezel-free-iphones-sapphire-iwatch-only/

If you cared to read the article or even just the title – “Double DEBUNK” – you’d see that the article states: “The biggest problem with this report— apart from the site’s track record— is that Apple recently acquired enough equipment for its new Arizona sapphire plant.”

They were commenting on another site reports that are most likely wrong. 9to5 has said for a long time that the new iPhone/s will have a Sapphire Crystal display.

And, yes they did use the same graphic.

    • Mike Beasley - 10 years ago

This “report” is just that: a report on what another source is claiming. We’re telling you what’s being said. We’re not saying we’ve seen the phone. We’re just telling what reliable publications have heard from their own independent sources.

In this case, a trusted Chinese news source claims to have had direct contact with multiple parties who went hands-on with an iPhone 6 prototype and presents information on the device’s design as provided by those sourcse.

Also, the report earlier today actually points out that an unreliable news source made a claim that does not seem to fit with evidence, specifically noting that the source has a dubious track record and that Apple’s recent sapphire purchase and plant opening seem to prove the opposite of what that report claimed. A quote from the earlier article:

“The biggest problem with this report— apart from the site’s track record— is that Apple recently acquired enough equipment for its new Arizona sapphire plant to produce 100-200 million 5-inch iPhone displays a year. While the report adds that Apple will likely use sapphire for the rumored iWatch display, it’s certainly preparing its Arizona plant to produce much beyond just that product.”

      • rogifan - 10 years ago

A trusted Chinese new source? Since when?

  5. John V. Huynh - 10 years ago

All iPhones have used iterations of Gorilla Glass, is that right?

  6. Samir Shah - 10 years ago

iPhone 5S sticking around maes a lot of sense. Also iPhone 5C getting a boot so that all models have 64 bits and Touch ID also makes a lot of sense. I presume that iPhone 5S will have subsidized price of $99. I think I posed a question in my mind and answered it myself. You will not be able to get an iPhone for subsidized price of $0. If you want a 64 bit processor and Touch ID you HAVE to go for a minimum price of $99. The Best Buy and such other stores may discount iPhone 5S to $50 and $0.

Apple will be in a unique position of having developers write 64 bit code and iOS 8 requiring 64 bits. What a clean break from the past!! (No sarcasm, I am applauding the decision fully).

I think Apple has found a bonding material for Sapphire that is shatterproof. Look at my comment elsewhere.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Nope. The 5C will be reworked with 5S components. They will not keep the 5S and the 6 alive together. The 5C is cheaper to produce and can exist as 2 models, $0 and $99.

  7. Large isn’t a big deal as long as the overall functionality and usability is promising, then it doesn’t matter, besides people like me go for quality.

  8. o0smoothies0o - 10 years ago

I seriously doubt there will be a 5.5″ screen. I seriously doubt Apple will stop with 4″ screens, at least any time soon, and no, I don’t count keeping the older device (5S) around as keeping 4″ screens. In my opinion it is likely that Apple will have at least (2) different iPhone 6 devices with identical internals (as far as power goes), and those will be a 4″ and 4.7″ iPhone 6. This is akin to the iPad Mini with Retina Display, and iPad Air having the exact same internals with the only distinguishing feature being screen size. Granted it is possible they will also make a 5.5″ iPhone 6, but I see that as being unlikely, given the fact that a phone that big is simply counterintuitive in Apple’s mind I believe (mine too, but that’s just me). Moreover, that would mean they would be producing 3 different iPhone 6 screen sizes, and I doubt they would ever do that, but I suppose if they believe there is a big enough market for 5.5″, it may happen. My guess is a 4″ iPhone will be around for the foreseeable future (every new model).

    • jlword - 10 years ago

Based on apples persistence that a small phone us best for one hand use I can’t see them fully ditching the 4″ size in a nee model. I can see them adding a larger display to satisfy those individuals who desire a larger screen. But to fully eliminate the smaller screen from thier line-up of “new” devices with latest specs(not repacked last years model) I think would alienate some users, go against their own model and make them less competitive against OEMs like Nokia and Samsung who have a range of screen sizes from 4″-6″.

    • Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 10 years ago

Yep that’s my thoughts on the next line up too. The 4″ will come starting with 16bg and the bigger one will come with 32gb to start and be $100 more. You’d still be able to upgrade the smaller one to 32 and 64 but maybe the larger one can go to 128 maxed out. Otherwise internals will be the same except maybe battery being slightly longer on larger one.

I’d really love it if they came out with a 3.5″ but I’m not holding my breath. These other rumors of two larger phones seem so totally crazy to me.

  9. Shaun G - 10 years ago

I don’t believe they’ll drop the 5c. They need an entry level iPhone to replace the iPod touch and the iPhone 4s. I think it’s more likely they will simply expand the iPhone line-up from 3 to 4 models.

  10. rogifan - 10 years ago

That mockup looks ridiculous. Where would the headphone jack go in a phone that thin? And what kind of battery life would it get? It’s obvious these people who mock shit up in photoshop aren’t engineers.

    • joel betances - 10 years ago

What if apple made their own thin headphone jack
Is apple after all they like to make their own things

      • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

Oh yeah that was REAL popular on iPhone 1 when no standard headphone cable could fit in the recessed jack.

  11. Felix Herzog - 10 years ago

I don’t like the idea of having a bigger iphone or even having a bigger phone. If I need a bigger screen to read i have my ipad mini as well there is airplay to throw funny stuff/videos to my tv screen.
My iphone is my music machine, my short texting machine, my telephone and my pocket video and photography machine…
I feel sad apple will obviously follow the wrong path of ‘biggering’ the mobile phones. People that bought these big phones from samsung just don’t have the money for two devices and (and special contracts) thus buy a ugly mixup… if they could they would use better ones :)

Hopefully this is just a hoax from apple marketing to check if apple people are smart enough to see biggering phones is a sad idea.

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

I don’t get it at all, honestly. There’s never been one single legitimate data point to show that those huge fugly phones sell well at all.

      • yes no - 10 years ago

Unless of course you count apple losing quite a lot of it mobile market to samsung and other phone companies with bigger displays.

      • originaldub - 10 years ago

To each his own. I think a lot of people prefer the larger screens available today. I a few people who have switched to S4’s and love the increased screen size.

    • originaldub - 10 years ago

Like you said your self not everyone can afford multiple devices and truthfully not everyone wants to switch between devices for different tasks. So for many people having one device with a larger screen is best and also most economical. Not everyone is a rich guy like you.

  12. K.n. Akbar - 10 years ago

need air gesture also so plz impro the facility !

  13. Drazen Mokic (@drale2k) - 10 years ago

I don’t get this rumor. Tim Cook himself dropped a big hint that there will not be a bigger screen iPhone soon http://www.businessinsider.com/why-doesnt-apple-sell-big-iphones-2013-5

  14. I’m desperately wish for something like iPhone Classic (like an iPod), or iPhone Mini (like an iPad). In other words, I want 3.5 inches screen. Because it was perfect. I was able to reach anything with my thumb without any additional movements.

    • Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 10 years ago

you and me both. Imagine how much of an engineering feat it would be if Apple made a phone as good as the iPhone 5s but in a 3.5″ form factor. It would be amazing. Super comfortable to hold, fit in your pocket so nice. I’d get it instantly but at this point I’m just hoping these rumors are nonsense and they keep the 4″ and add one larger size since many people want that.

  15. Jasper Yeung - 10 years ago

can ‘t wait to see it!!!!

  16. john 7055 - 10 years ago

When Apple company has official launched the iPhone 5c I was expecting them to put the iPhone 5 in a plastic housing but they did not do so and was surprised realy on it
they are charging so high to get enough profit and ther e are people who are paying for he same but i must say that it is a WOW and it seprates the user and shows the lifestyle and financial capacity
    of user..

    • PMZanetti - 10 years ago

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

    • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

Are you on two or three hallucinogenics simultaneously?

      • originaldub - 10 years ago

ha ha ha ha ha ha … Lame.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

Three, then? Sounds like three to me. If you actually had any opinion if your own, you would have posted it.

      • Robert Brooks - 10 years ago

Aren’t you the guy that doesn’t even own an iPhone that stalks every iPhone story?

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

No. Here’s a question: How can you possibly defend the monumental idiocy in the original post? How do you not comprehend the problem here?

  17. Ilko Sarafski - 10 years ago

It would be just great if they just let few models – 3,5″, 4,3″ and 5″ – live. Or maybe even 4″, 4,7″, 5.5″.
And, yeah, it’s about time for gestures to be input in iphones… my iPad 2 is 2 and a half years old now but, believe me, you can’t distinguish it from the new one… I always keep it in case, always use gestures, so buttons works perfectly. So yeah, we want gestures for iPhones as well.

  18. rettun1 - 10 years ago

I hope that the “2 size” rumor was mid understood, and that Apple won’t have both a 4.7 and 5.5, but instead keep a 4 inch model (or maybe 4.1/4.2) and one phone with either 4.7 or 5.5. I hope…

  19. Alex Devane - 10 years ago

I reckon they will sell the iPhone 6 which comes in 4.7 and 5.5inches but still sell the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s (for those who want a metal phone) for people who still want the smaller screen.

  20. Marlon Bishop - 10 years ago

why would it sport a new and larger screen when you can’t move around icon apps nor have widgets.

    • rettun1 - 10 years ago

I don’t spend too much time on the homescreen. And you can’t move your apps around?

  21. themis333 - 10 years ago

Reblogged this on Taste of Apple and commented:
Lines up with what we’ve been hearing for the last few weeks. Can’t wait to see what happens.

  22. Cedanio Bacon - 10 years ago

    Wow!

  23. nodsworth - 10 years ago

As much as I do NOT want a larger screen, from a global sales strategic standpoint this makes perfect sense. Here in the US, most people have a smart phone, laptop, tv. (most, not all). But, in India and other markets, it’s becoming more common to use a larger screened “phablet” (i hate that term) and forego other devices. It’s a simple matter of economics and consumerism. Apple just wants in on that market.

  24. Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 10 years ago

This keeps coming up but if it’s the case I won’t be buying an iPhone again. I don’t really want the 4″ model and definitely won’t get the 4″ if it’s not as good as the new model. I don’t care how thin a larger screened phone will be I won’t be getting one.

    • Freddy Travis - 10 years ago

@Kaplag You need to stop crying. Get a hold of yourself! I know you can do it. Take a deep breath. Apple will be calling you shortly with a huge apology. As you must know, you ARE the voice of the people. Why else would you have felt the need to post that?

lol please go buy a fugly Android. We don’t need people like you moping around on the iOS side of things…

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

Are you dense? How would going to Android solve his problem with unusably large phones?

      • Freddy Travis - 10 years ago

I’m just saying… If Apple does change to a larger screen size (which will probably be because the world is ready for that) their are a few small screen Android phones that Greg Kaplan can go try out.

I’m just sick of people posting to the world that they will drop Apple for another phone. As if I or anyone cares what Greg does! lol maybe I do… I don’t even know anymore… I’m just sick of people who complain like that.

      • Greg Kaplan (@kaplag) - 10 years ago

@Freddy Get a hold of yourself! It’s the internet. People just say what’s on their mind. Take a deep breath and stop being an self Self-righteous ass on an apple rumor site. You are taking more time to complain than I did.

for the sake of continuing to mock your reaction: lol please stop reading comments. We don’t need people like you moping around anywhere.

  25. NQZ (@surgesoda) - 10 years ago

Should have never released the 5S and gone straight to this…but who knows if this is even real.

    • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

      >>Should have never released the 5S and gone straight to this…

Yet another tidbit of wisdom from the worst troll on the website.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

This coming from you is hilarious.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

And your lack of any intelligent thought at all times, I find hilarious.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Bravo, troll. I don’t agree with what NQZ said because people would have turned against Apple if they immediately went from that tiny, insignificant screen to a giant one in one generation. I was merely pointing out the irony in you calling someone else a troll when you are, in fact, the biggest troll here. You trying to insult my intelligence is even more hilariously ironic.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

I’m sorry, was there a point in any of that? He’s a complete idiot who’s purposefully ignoring how Apple does things, and you think he’s right? Just shut up and go away.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Look at you, with your complete lack of reading comprehension. I never once said I agreed with NQZ. In fact, I flat out said I disagreed and explained why I disagreed, yet you insist on pretending I agree with him.

The point of my two posts was that you’re a horrible person and the worst poster on this, or any website I’ve been on. You’re a piece of trash.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

Good for you. Get over it.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Again, the little boy cannot even admit he was wrong.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

The guy posts an idiotic comment, based in absolutely no fact or reason and patently false to anyone paying attention to the topic of discussion, I refute it, and you think I’m wrong?

        Get bent, imbecile.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

I guess you’re incapable of understanding. Read my first reply to you here. I did not once say that you were wrong. I merely stated that you calling someone a troll is hilarious. You know, seeing as how you’re a troll and the worst person on this website. Having to explain that to you over and over again makes me fully understand how much of a moron you truly are.

My last post, saying that you can’t even admit you’re wrong, is because you spent this entire time trying stating that I was agreeing with NQZ, when I absolutely was not. You’re still insisting that I was telling you that you were wrong about you disagreeing with NQZ. I was not, and I said multiple times that I thought that NQZ was wrong. I was also pointing out that it’s very ironic for you to call anyone a troll. Learn how to comprehend what you read, you blithering fool. You’re what’s wrong with the internet.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

When you have a post worth reading, maybe I’ll read one.

Until then, you remain a mindless imbecile incapable of comprehending that this isn’t a website where you get to hate Apple products.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

I don’t hate on Apple at all. I have several Apple Products (iPhone, Macbook Air 2012, and iPad 3). What I do hate on is worthless people like you.

There really needs to be an ignore button so I can just hide every comment from you because you’re a worthless human being and offer nothing but negativity and a brazen disregard for reality. I sincerely hope you just leave or get banned.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

        >>I have several Apple Products

Which would mean something if we were talking about your specific products. What we don’t need are conditional coverup statements.

        Get over yourself.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Also, to you at least, this seems to be a website where you cannot disagree with anything Apple does or you’re an imbecile (a word you throw around a lot, but I don’t think you know what it means).

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

        Maybe just stop lying instead.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Where is one place that I lied? Oh right, you can’t find one because I did not lie once.

Your little comment about conditional coverup statements is completely asinine. You say I’m hating on Apple, when I haven’t said one single thing here that hates on Apple. I actually really enjoy Apple products. The thing is, and it’s a shocker, I can enjoy products that have Android and Windows as well (gasp!). You, on the other hand, hate on everything non-Apple until Apple does it and then it’s genius.

The fact is, you keep moving your argument. First it was that I was agreeing with NQZ when I never said such a thing, then it was that I’m hating on Apple when I haven’t done that once, and now it’s that I’m lying. You don’t seem to understand that you’re a worthless asshole who can’t get over himself.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

        >>Where is one place that I lied?

In every single post. Again, since everything you’ve claimed is publicly disproven.

        Shut up and go away.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Ah, yes. Generalities. The sanctum of those who don’t know what they are talking about. Name one place here that I lied. Just one. I sincerely hope your anger doesn’t kill you.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

If only any of those words applied to any of the statements being made here, you know? Then you might be able to garnish replies that don’t call you out as the troll you are.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

And here we go with you ignoring the question. I haven’t lied once, and I agreed with you that Apple should not have made a very large screen iPhone instead of the 5S. I said that it would be stupid for Apple to go from the small screens they had up until through the 4S to a phablet type screen because it would alienate people. Apple introducing larger screens slowly makes the size change less jarring.

Yet you sit here and call me a troll. The irony is thick.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

Good for you. Shut up and go away.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Again you look like a fool.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

“Who’s more foolish; the fool or the fool who follows him?”

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Nobody follows you in your line of thinking, so I guess you are the foolish one.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

        Encore! Encore!

        Thanks for all the proof.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Um, you continue calling me a liar, and I ask you where I lied, and you keep telling me I have no proof. What the hell are you even talking about. If anything, the burden of proof is on you to point out where I lied. Hint: I haven’t.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

Where on earth are we even discussing you?

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Since you’re too much of a moron to scroll up, let me show you the posts you called me a liar in:

        “Maybe just stop lying instead.”

“>>Where is one place that I lied?

In every single post. Again, since everything you’ve claimed is publicly disproven.

        Shut up and go away.”

There. You discussed me and called me a liar, the only thing I even said in this comment section is that you’re a huge troll and that I own multiple Apple products. Where, again, is that publicly “disproven” (sic)? (Guess what, disproven isn’t a word.)

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

        Go get ‘em tiger.

        >>Guess what, disproven isn’t a word.

        Sure thing, kiddo.

      • thejuanald - 10 years ago

Great, so you realize you lost the argument and now you’re resorting to being condescending. I’m glad you’ve realized you lost and are conceding defeat. We’re done here.

      • Tallest Skil - 10 years ago

        Go get ‘em, tiger.

  26. Freddy Travis - 10 years ago

I feel like the majority of these responses are against a larger iPhone. I couldn’t be more ready for one. I also think the world is ready for a larger iPhone screen. If the bezel around the screen is thinner, and the resolution is as dense as this article claims… the new iPhone will be sexy as hell!

Whatever Apple decides to do, I feel like they are in a unique place where they will do what the majority of people are “ready for” not what they expect. A year ago, I think I might have not wanted a bigger screen. I WANT ONE NOW SO I HOPE WE ALL DO.

Freddy, go buy a fugly android phone, They have been plenty of larger and higher density screened android phones for years. Unlike me wanting a small high end device, you’d have plenty of options!

But Seriously? I post about how I personally don’t want a bigger phone and you give me shit. Now here you are going on about not only what you want but some grand notion of what the people of the world are “ready for.”

It totally makes sense that Apple will make a larger phone, so you can be happy. My point is I think these rumors of them making two larger phones and removing the current phone size is kind of ridiculous. You want a big phone? Cool, Apple can make that. But why would they close the door on everyone who doesn’t want that. That would be like them removing the 13″ macbook air (the one the majority of people get) and replacing it with a 15″ and a 17″ model.

I guess I should have been clearer, but I can’t imagine Apple throwing out the current screen size in favor of two new ones. I am assuming they will keep with the current screen size and have an additional larger screened model. It would be silly to think they would stop producing the current screen size for the people who like that size.

I’ll say it again though, most people outside tech blogs are probably more excited about a larger screened iPhone and would probably buy it. And it would most likely be fare more popular. That seems to be case with Android. Screens are getting bigger. I’m fine with that.

I like Apple and IOS so that on a big phone sounds great to me. Obviously you don’t and thats fine. I get that. We have different opinions.

I hope we both get what we want. I feel like we will. No bad feelings. Good day.

A larger iPhone will be hugely popular. The only people against it have never used any phone larger than 4″ for any extended time.

  27. That would be the right thing to do… I would go for the 4.7inch as 5.5its not that portabile but some people would like a massive screen so yes.. Both versiions 5.5 & 4.7 and the 4.7 would be more popular… No more bezzle slimmer & again aluminium body!:)
