As previously announced, United Airlines today updated its iOS app with support for a new in-flight entertainment service available only to iPhone and iPad users. The service offers access to around 150 movies and 200 TV shows and is available free to users on select United Airlines flights.

The updated United Airlines app for iPhone and iPad is available now, but the service is limited to select flights as the airline works to install new hardware on its fleet. The service is also limited to users connected to United’s WiFi network.

United notes you can check if your flight supports the service through “the Inflight Amenities tab on the united.com Flight Status & Information page, or check the Amenities section of the Flight Status Details screen in the United app within 24 hours of your flight departure.” The new entertainment system will also be available to laptop users through a browser plugin, but it’s initially limited to iPhone and iPad for mobile device users.

  1. As user of economic class, I was satisfied if I could have a personal TV in long distance flights instead of a small screen between chairs….

This app should let you order a drink, pillow, call flight attendant, etc.

Having had the “opportunity” to experience UA’s personal device entertainment I have to say it is very disappointing. Flying from Hawaii the wi fi signal is frequently lost and passengers are unable to access the numerous movies and tv shows as advertised. When speaking to an agent in the United Lounge about the problems with “streaming” video, she referred to it as “screaming” video which is more accurate as passengers were screaming at poor flight attendants when the signals were lost.
