BGR: iOS 9 beta 2 reportedly coming later today along with 8.4 GM seed [Updated]

IOS9

[Update: After no betas hit yesterday, BGR says iOS 8.4 GM build 12H141 will hit today.]

A new report from BGR claims that Apple will release the second beta of iOS 9 today along with the GM build of iOS 8.4. The report says it’s possible Apple could bump back the new iOS 9 seed another week. Though two week intervals have basically been the standard for most betas, there have been exceptions in the past.

This isn’t the first time BGR has tried to predict iOS beta schedules, though some previous attempts have proven incorrect, so this one, while it seems likely based on the fact that we’re now two weeks out from WWDC, should probably be taken with a grain of salt.

iOS 8.4 will be released to the public later this month with Apple Music, which may or may not include Taylor Swift’s latest album following public criticism of Apple’s payment policy and a quick reversal on the company’s part.

iOS 9 was introduced during WWDC and includes a host of new features, such as a revamped Siri-powered Search screen, a new Notes app, split-screen multitasking on the iPad, and more.

So when to expect the Public Beta 1?

  2. Traducto (@TraductoApp) - 9 years ago

Let’s hope iOS 9 beta 2 update is delivered OTA

8.4 While appearing to be stable enough has a significant incoming call bug. Which is a massive pain in the arse. Hopefully thats fixed.

    • atokosch - 9 years ago

Yes!! It is on iOS 9 too! I have never had so many incoming calls until I updated to iOS 9 2 weeks ago, just my luck huh? Haha hopefully it’s fixed with the updates.

How will the software updates required for Apple Pay UK be introduced then? I take it that the 8.4 GM seed (if released today) won’t have the Apple Pay update, so will there be another update in-between 8.4 GM and the general public release?

    • 仇恨 (@iNiLF) - 9 years ago

The release will be June 30.

    • Walter Tizzano - 9 years ago

Why do you guess so? If Apple pay has to be introduced in schedule it has to come with 8.4, then it means it has to come with the 8.4 GM (that has to be bit to bit equal to the final release).

      • zomgnerd - 9 years ago

The Gold Master is not a “bit to bit equal” with the public release. Bugs are still present in the GM. All the GM means is that all the functionality that will be release in the public release is here and we think all the bugs are gone. It’s not a bit to bit equal.

Since Pay is coming on the 30th of July, I would speculate that it’s not included with the 8.4 release but released with a minor 8.4.1 release. Since Pay is already implemented and successful in the U.S. It’s a simple process to get everything running in the UK.

      • zomgnerd - 9 years ago

I just saw its June not July, my bad….. Probably will be in the Gold Master then. Apologies for the confusion.0

Apple doesn’t need a update for Apple Pay to work in a country. It flicks a switch and it’s there. I’ve got Apple Pay on my iPhone. I’m from the UK. It doesn’t work only because Apple hasn’t let the UK banks available to public.

      • GadgetBen - 9 years ago

It will need to update Passbook so yes it does need a software update. You must be running the U.S. Software and have a U.S. Account.

Currently the UK Passbook only allows you to scan tickets and passes nothing else

      • vinokurovalexey - 9 years ago

GadgetBen, are you saying US firmware is any different from any other? I don’t believe it’s true.

      • baezfelipe - 9 years ago

I think what joshblinney meant was, because Pay is already on the software today (currently active only in the US), the “switch” would happen on the server side on Apple the same way that an app may be selling in one country but not in other.
I do believe that it won’t need an update to allow UK Pay, unless, there are different security (or similar) requirements for Europe that would require a code change.

      • GadgetBen - 9 years ago

Does your Passbook app in the U.S. allow you to add credit cards? Ours in the UK doesn’t, so there is a difference in software. I remember the update that introduced Apple Pay was over 1GB more in size compared to the same update for UK.

      • mattbodell2014 - 9 years ago

There is no difference in software, you can add ApplePay to your device now simply by changing your locality. You won’t be able to add any cards to it unless you have a US card but its already there.

      • joshblinney - 9 years ago

Yeah Ben. I’ve changed my location. Wallet is coming with iOS 9 not iOS 8.4. But even so if there was any need for a update Apple would put it in 8.4 too. But yea. It’s Apple server side that turn Apple Pay on. Because there was this video of you tube of a Canadian man using Apple Pay in Canada because he changed his location and had an American bank card so it worked. Say an American came over to the UK. They could use Apple Pay over here because they have the supported card. And UK has a lot of nfc terminals

      • GadgetBen - 9 years ago

What about Apple Watch then? The button action that works to bring Apple Pay on your watch in the US does nothing in the UK. How can changing my Country allow my Apple Watch to work? I doubt it

I’m not sure what the significance of this post is? Aren’t you just pushing traffic to BGR. It’s like a silly thing to put up since it’s rumored for today…. Not only do the regulars on the site already expect this release cycle but If it’s right you’ll be posting another post in a few hours.

  7. Paddy Gordon - 9 years ago

Thank god. Battery life on all my iOS 9 devices so far is dreadful. Can barely last 6 hours with very light usage.

Anyone else weirded out by the wooden hand?

  9. Graham J - 9 years ago

“which may or may not include Taylor Swift’s latest album”

omg who cares? Someone please tell the press that quality and popularity are usually polar opposites in music.

  10. davidt4n - 9 years ago

I think iOS 8.4 and iOS 9 public beta will release together.

  11. PMZanetti - 9 years ago

Thanks BGR, we couldn’t have guessed. Probably today. Possibly not.

    iOS8 beta 2: Released on the Tuesday, 2 weeks & 1 day after iOS8 beta 1.
iOS7 beta 2: Released on the Monday, 2 weeks after iOS7 beta 1.
iOS6 beta 2: Released on the Monday, 2 weeks after iOS6 beta 1.

Not exactly a long shot that the 2nd beta might come out today or tomorrow!

  13. drgreenberg - 9 years ago

It’s also possible they’ll delay the iOS 9 beta to coincide with the June 30 8.4 release. This way, they can include the same version of the Music app fully updated for the new streaming service. That is, unless the current app is fully enabled and Apple can simply expose the new features server side.

The guy that is supposed to call in the release authorization for beta 2 couldn’t because he’s running beta 1, and his battery died :(

  15. tdgeditor1 - 9 years ago

Guys beware of ios 9 beta. I haven’t seen any ios beta like this. My ecosystem blew. I can not revert back because I installed watchos Beta which is another disaster. I am sure it will be great but now is not the time. Believe.

  16. stonewall012 - 9 years ago

Maybe Taylor Swift needs to write another blog to get the Beta released

  17. Chris Denny - 9 years ago

5 PM here in the midwest, no new beta software for either yet
