NBA player blames nagging arm injury on larger-screened iPhone 6 Plus

There have been a wide range of both complaints and praises regarding the larger screened iPhones Apple introduced last fall, but this one is new. Matt Bonner, longtime member of the San Antonio Spurs, gave an interview recently in which he blamed a season-changing injury on Apple’s larger screened iPhone (via Yahoo).

Bonner revealed that he suffered from tennis elbow in his non-shooting arm for a two-and-half month period during the 2014-2015 NBA season. The pain was such a distraction to Bonner that before we would even catch the ball he would be dreading the pain. How did he come down with tennis elbow? He used his iPhone 6 Plus too much…

Bonner said that since his new iPhone was so much bigger than his previous device, he had to stretch further to reach the buttons. Surprisingly enough, the Spurs training staff has seen an injury like this before, so Bonner’s case is not as unique as you may want to think.

Here’s what Bonner had to say regarding season-altering injury:

“I hate to make excuses, I was raised to never make excuses, but I went through a two-and-a-half month stretch where I had really bad tennis elbow, and during that stretch it made it so painful for me to shoot I’d almost be cringing before I even caught the ball like, ‘Oh, this is going to kill.’ Everybody is going to find this hilarious, but here’s my theory on how I got it. When the new iPhone came out it was way bigger than the last one, and I think because I got that new phone it was a strain to use it, you have to stretch further to hit the buttons, and I honestly think that’s how I ended up developing it.”

Meanwhile, 39-year old Tim Duncan is chugging right along and the Spurs recently signed LaMarcus Aldridge, who will likely eat away at Bonner’s playing time for the upcoming season. Also, if the 6′ 10″ NBA player is complaining about the size of the iPhone 6 Plus, what does that say about it?

  1. This guy sounds like a total Bonner

  2. herewegoagain7 - 9 years ago

What does that say about it? That the 6’10” basketball player is making excuses.

  3. 89p13 - 9 years ago

    Oh, Boo Hoo, Boo Hoo!

Grow a pair and quit yer whining

  4. irelandjnr - 9 years ago

Sounds like a classic case of TMS. Just like how people who sit in the same seat everyday for 8 hours staring at the same screen blame their computer for their carpel tunnel, when it’s really merely their mind’s reaction to stress. Look up TMS it’s really interesting. It affects perfectionist more than others.

  5. I have a similar complaint. I’m not a professional athlete earning millions because of Apple’s PowerMac and Macbook Pro computers.

  6. There is something called the iPhone 6 with a smaller 4.7″ screen. This is utterly ridiculous. How much time does this guy spend on his phone to be injured by it? smh…

  7. joshnolan222 - 9 years ago

Honestly no joke I got the 6 plus and used it one handed I’m also only 5’9 but fingertips going numb after heavy use and other very similar symptoms… Ditched it for a regular 6 and it’s better but occasionally get sensation again I just have to keep it basically as Alina’s possible so an ultra slim case…first world problems I guess…

    • gigglybeast - 9 years ago

Why do so many people want to use their phones one-handed? I’ve always used two, even with the smaller screens. Maybe if you’re texting while walking or driving it would be helpful, but you shouldn’t be doing that anyway.

  8. mrdude42 - 9 years ago

Are you kidding me? He’s blaming the phone for his injury? As if he HAS to use the phone so much that it strains his arm? No one is forcing him to an iPhone 6 plus and I’m sure at any moment he could have bought another “less straining” mobile device if he wanted to. It’s such bullshit that he’s claiming its his iPhone 6 plus’ fault.

  9. bwulfe - 9 years ago

If Matt Bonner is having too much difficulty reaching across the screen of his iPhone 6 Plus; he should just give it to his teammate Kawhi Leonard. (Kawhi is know for having the largest hands of any player currently in the NBA with a hand spread of 11.25 inches)

    • bloodymerzkizzoid - 9 years ago

      The Hand

      • bwulfe - 9 years ago

        Actually, he’s nicknamed “The Claw”.

  10. samuelsnay - 9 years ago

Wow. I use my 6+ constantly and have zero problems. What a whiner.

  11. James Katt (@jameskatt) - 9 years ago

    Give me a break.

A 250 pound 6’10” Man with HUGE HANDS complains about the size of his iPhone 6 Plus which is about the same size as any other Android Phone.

    Give me a ffffing break.

    This is ridiculous an excuse.

He should be using Siri more often for dictation if he is using his iPhone 6 Plus too much.

  12. bigern75 - 9 years ago

buwahahahahahah!!! Lame lame lame! Do I get to blame my tennis elbow on penthouse and playboy while growing up?

  13. mahmudf2014 - 9 years ago

Why is everyone think that this is his fault? Nobody blames the 6 Plus. He is right at some point. 6 Plus is so big and also it’s much harder to hold it because of its curved edges. Btw, it weighs more. If you compare it to something like LG G4 which has the same screen size, it becomes much obvious. I’m an iPhone 6 user and i like 6 Plus. Sorry but that’s how it is. He is most likely right.

    • scumbolt2014 - 9 years ago

Not a basketball player with huge hands.

    • tmrjij718 - 9 years ago

A phone can’t be the blame for injuries caused by using it too much. There are two size for the iPhone 6, reachability features, landscape mode in many of the apps, and the large screen phone market started way before the 6 came. There is no suitable excuse. He didn’t have to get the 6 Plus. People who bought the 6 plus either have bigger hands or find use in its size.
The LG G4 weighs 5.43 ounces while the iPhone 6 Plus weighs 6.07 ounces. It not much of a difference at all.

    • lkrupp215 - 9 years ago

And of course, if he had purchased a huge Samsung phablet or the LG you mention he wouldn’t have experienced this ‘season-changing injury.’ Only Apple products can do that. Bad Apple.

So can Bonner sue Apple for millions? Your take please?

      • mahmudf2014 - 9 years ago

My dear friend, this is not what i meant. He says this himself: It was much bigger than the last model. Is he right about this? Definitely. Is anybody forced him to get an 6 Plus? Don’t think so. This is clearly his choice. He could have bought iPhone 6. But he wouldn’t. What i’m trying to say is 6 Plus is so big. So i agree with him at that point. Secondly, it has very slim design, curvered sides, big bezels and also it’s heavy. Even more than the other phones. This is why i share LG G4 as an example cause it has the same screen size. While my iPhone 6 is in my hands without a case makes me feel like it can slip any moment if I don’t grasp it.

So he can be right in his way but i agree, blaming a phone is not a clever way to handle a situation like this.

  14. Rich Davis (@RichDavis9) - 9 years ago

Now that I think about it. I’m having the same problem. Oh, my elbow, it hurts…. Ouch.. Oh wait, I don’t even take enough photos to warrant even THINKING I have the same problem. I guess it must have been in my head…….. :-)

I think the guy has Basketball elbow and he’s just calling it Tennis elbow from using his iPhone. A basketball player doesn’t get elbow problems from shooting basketballs? Yeah, right. Maybe he’s shooting more hoops than before and since he’s using his elbows more, that’s what the REAL cause is. Jeez.

  15. opsono - 9 years ago

I’m totally surprised this a-hole hasn’t found an a-hole lawyer to sue Apple. What a world.

  16. scumbolt2014 - 9 years ago

Fuck that shit, what a total toolbox idiot.

If that were really the case then what about the fandroids holding their tabloid size tablets up to their numbskulls.

  17. Mondaris (@Mondaris) - 9 years ago

If this guy were using a large android phone you would all agree with him.

  18. Integ (@integ) - 9 years ago

I’m on my 6+ all the dang time. Literally multiple hours per day as I go through my workday (I use the phone for work, heh.) I have zero issues with it. This guy’s excuse is utterly lame. Put on your big boy pants, and go see a physical therapist with that pile of cash you get from the NBA, whiner.

  19. arezhik - 9 years ago

Did he miss the reachability feature?

Double tap your home button to move the top half of the screen closer to bottom of the screen.

Must be to lazy to do that…

  20. Steve Pounder - 9 years ago

This guy is just sorry. I wouldn’t even be able to claim this with a straight face. If indeed this were real, you need to reevaluate your life, you’re just soft and not meant to survive.

  21. incredibilistic - 9 years ago

Might I suggest using the Reachability feature. Either that or learn to use the phone with two hands.

P.S. – He should never look at a Galaxy Note, his hand might actually separate from his wrist. Either that or he’ll get carpal tunnel from using the stylus.

    • Mondaris (@Mondaris) - 9 years ago

Galaxy note 4 is a bit smaller than the 6+

    • thejuanald - 9 years ago

The Note has a smaller frame while maintaining a larger screen than the 6 Plus, and a smaller overall size. Please stop spreading lies about the Note, @incredibilistic.

  22. coolfactor - 9 years ago

It’s not a far reach that extensive use of the larger device could be a factor in his injury, but has he downgraded to the smaller version yet? He can easily afford to, so why the headlines?

  23. Tom Who (@TommieWho) - 9 years ago

I hate the larger size of the iPhone 6. Sticking to my 5S, the perfect size, until Apple comes out with a smaller iPhone or I can convince myself to buy a different, smaller phone. Bigger is not always better!

  24. josephferranti - 9 years ago

I am guessing that he did not know that you can hit the Home button twice to bring down the screen so you do not have to stretch your fingers. Thus preventing Tennis Elbow.

  25. joshyoungmd - 9 years ago

As an orthopedic surgeon, I can tell you… NO, that’s not why, not by a long shot :).

  26. sardonick - 9 years ago

I had to check and see if it was April 1st, when I realized it wasn’t, I just kept repeating WTF, WTF, WTF.

  27. يحي (@aratuk) - 9 years ago

Nevermind the phone… what the hell is the thing on his face? Why does playing basketball require a transparent phantom of the opera mask?

    • Paul Andrew Dixon - 9 years ago

I can only assume it is because he is scared of getting injured in a game of basketball — in the good old days, men who played sports didn’t need all this protection, and they certainly would never dream of blaming a phone for their arm problem — thing of the people that used to use actual brick size phones, basketballs that were heavier, none branded cheap shoes…
He’s probably a player getting too old to play the sport professionally — so rather than be honest and say it’s the excessive playing that’s injuring him (basically he can’t hack it anymore), he’s decided to blame something else :-(

  28. lcfbill - 9 years ago

His story makes no sense. Perhaps there is some injury one can get by stretching for iPhone buttons, but there is no way to get tennis elbow from that kind of activity.

  29. nick (@nicksitruc) - 9 years ago

double tap the touch id, and the screen will come down.

  30. Paul Andrew Dixon - 9 years ago

“I don’t like to make excuses” — that is the biggest load of old tosh i have heard in a long time…

    I am 5’4 (about 161cm) and weigh around 54kg — basically i am a short skinny guy… not some tall muscular guy…
I play tennis for fun on a regular basis (3-4 times a week)… i also own the iphone 6plus…

The only time I’ve had issues with my arm is when i switched to a new racket a few years back — it actually affected my wrist — i have never had any other issues… even with my phone!!!

Usually what causes things like ‘tennis elbow’ is a repeated action causing abnormal swelling — the fact that the iphone 6plus, although bog, is actually quite light — either he is using the phone constantly, using it wrong OR he’s doing something else repeatedly on a regular basis — (hmm, i wonder if he’s just broken up with someone, or is single, or something)

    At 6’10 — big hands — i honestly don’t think it’s the iphone 6plus…lol

  31. Jeff Olejniczak - 9 years ago

Learn how to double tap the home button and you’re injury free and you can reach all buttons! Read the product manual you fool.

  32. Martin Vega - 9 years ago

This guy makes a living lifting, bouncing and trowing a 22oz ball and he is complaining about a device that weights only 6 ounces? Which he uses by choice by the way. Cry me a f****n river!

  33. Ursu Dan - 9 years ago

Man, switch to android. I’ve heard that it’s optimized for large hands and small brains.

  34. mytawalbeh - 9 years ago

“Everybody is going to find this hilarious” correct !
    and I find it “Ridiculous”

  35. Robert Wood - 9 years ago

Such big man have excuse like this makes me think I should give my little kids slack for their excuses. If he has problem with larger screen iphone 6 plus than use smaller screen iphone 6 or iphone 5s or use bluetooth hand-free headset or companion earpods that Apple ships with every iphone.

  36. bsenka - 9 years ago

So I just learned something: I’m tougher than a professional athlete. I’m 5’7″ with little girly hands, and I’ve been using my iPhone 6 plus every day since the week it was released without any issues whatsoever.

  37. Jazz Bo - 9 years ago

What a bunch of garbage. This is a basketball player. Have you guys ever seen the size of a professional basketball player’s fingers. They are not short. If the rest of us can reach these buttons without getting tennis elbow his fingers should be wrapping around that thing. Come on. Tennis elbow. Bollocks. His wife or girlfriend probably had him in the dog house for a few months and that’s why he’s got tennis elbow. Blaming it on the iPhone. Shame on him.
