Apple’s HomeKit at CES 2016: ceiling fans, door locks, switches, thermostats, & more

CES_2016_HomeKit

Apple’s HomeKit platform, which allows Siri-control of Wi-Fi connected home automation accessories, is one of the big areas of interest for accessory makers at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. With the event officially kicking off today, we’ve put together one place to find all of the announcements this week for the latest HomeKit products.

Some of the highlights so far: the first ceiling fans and window blinds for the platform are on show this week, while more outlets, switches, thermostats and door lock options also gain support. And the products come from some notable companies in the space including Honeywell, Lutron, Kwikset, iHome, and more.

Head below for the full list of HomeKit accessories announced this week.

We start things off with new wall outlets, switches, and light sockets from iDevices:

I have a pair of the 1st generation iHome SmartPlugs and just received a Philips Hue lighting kit this morning. The SmartPlugs have worked great for controlling a fan and lamp, respectively. It’s great coming home from work and not having to fumble around to find a light switch (I live in an apartment with interior entrances). Instead, the lamp turns on a few minutes before I arrive and turns itself off automatically at 11:00PM in case I forget to turn it off myself.

So far I have been using the physical button on the SmartPlug to turn off the lamp when going to bed early (without my iPhone handy). I really wish Apple would add Homekit support to the 4th gen Apple TV for controlling via the Siri Remote. I am currently looking at ordering the Philips dimming switch to provide a physical control I could mount near the regular light switch on the wall (just to turn the lamp off at night). That 2nd gen SmartPlug with a remote control looks tempting though.

It would be awesome if Honeywell can add Homekit remote monitoring to a Humidifier, I just bought one and get paranoid about that water level in the tank. If it were possible to check the water level and change the fan setting remotely it would be a must-buy for me.
