As MoviePass is digging its own grave, the e-commerce company Amazon may be looking at ways to acquire the movie theater chain Landmark Theaters, which would push the company into the brick-and-mortar cinema industry.
As reported by Bloomberg, Amazon is looking to acquire the business from Wagner/Cuban Cos. At the time of writing, nothing is final and the two companies are still in talks. It’s possible that nothing will be announced publicly if the deal does not go through.
Amazon, which already has its own Prime Video and Prime Music streaming services with a ton of original and exclusive content on both, could use its deal with Landmark to further expand its efforts in the cinema. If the deal succeeds, the Seattle-based company would acquire 50 theaters in 27 markets.
Landmark, for those unaware, focuses its cinema on independent and foreign films, rather than AAA movies. Bloomberg describes Landmark’s theaters as, “known for art-house fare, and some high-end locations include coffee bars or lounges, setting them apart from the typical movie experience.”
The report notes that Netflix has also been in talks with Landmark as a potential buyer.
