Like the rest of the people who will burn in hell we are tooling around with our new Leopard upgrades (don't worry we've got an order in for a family pack - already paid for) finding some little interesting things here and there. One majorly cool thing we found is Front Row....in its new home in the /Applications folder like a real grown up app. It used to be hidden in the Library folder.
The best part of the new Front row is that you can browse your local network for media to play. That isn't just your MP3 SMB fileserver, that is also your buddies computer that came over to hang out on your wireless. That also includes your pesky neighbor who is stealing your bandwidth to download torrents. Any shares on the network - are browsable.
Unfortunately, Front Row still doesn't play .avi files (or at least our tricked out super compressed movies). I am sure there are some hacks on the way - or maybe we need to update our codecs? We'll find out soon.
Also the new Front Row has a separate menu for podcasts, movies, tv and music. the settings page is very similar to AppleTV. Actually. This is AppleTV - in Leopard!

Sold!
This was the piece I was looking for to get my DVD collection online. I've got a tower box (x64 Vista) with lots of HDD space and plenty more empty bays for a 1TB HDD or two. Got Handbrake of course to rip the hundreds of DVDs. I just needed an easy (as in easy enough for a child to do it) way to get those available for playing from over the network. Sounds like this is the piece.
Now I just need to order my copy of Leopard....in it's convient Mac Mini packaging. ;)

all files types work with this version of front row (avi, mpeg, mpg, .mkv, .mov, etc). I installed perian and then started front row up...it was great.
loads random thumbnail jackets for the files super quick off my external drive (very impressed) and was able to play everything very smoothly....even HD files in mkv format.
now i need a hack to allow changing of subtitles and syncing of subtitiles and im in glory.
So far, not that impressive.
So far, not that impressive. Maybe it'll get more impressive once I use it for a while. However, whatever took me a 1 minute and 30 seconds to do in Photoshop CS3 in Tiger, takes 50 seconds in Leopard so I definetly like that part. Word launches faster it seems.
Spaces are cool. I haven't tried the Time Machine yet. One definite gripe, (or maybe I just haven't found a way to do it yet) I can't set Firefox to download stuff into Downloads folder which I suppose isn't THAT big of a deal. Another is that I liked Tiger's little black triangles in the dock better than Leopard's funky light blue looks like eggs. Maybe it's because I came from Windows and it was easier to see what programs were running with a glance at the dock.
firefox not saving into your
firefox not saving into your downloads folder is a problem with firefx....not leopard.
check your prefs.
The best thing about it, is
The best thing about it, is it plays Video_TS files. I kid you not. No need to use DVD Assist anymore, Front Row 2 does Video_TS all by itself.
For me that's the best new feature in Front Row
Totally. I LOVE this
Totally. I LOVE this feature. The only thing I miss is being able to exit frontrow and leave music playing... it tends to make better random mixes than iTunes, and now I can't do that while browsing the web :'( ! Oh well...maybe something will be added later?

On a couple of other forums people have said that the remote server needs to be running Leopard also for time machine to back up there.
Yeah...Well.... it makes it
Yeah...Well.... it makes it tough with the G3 B&W doesn't it?
Now, if 10.4.11 will come out with HFS file system, it would solve a lot of headaches around the net. Because "Pick a drive. Any drive" is just not true unless I can pick a network attached drive as well.
BTW. Sorry about hijacking this whole "Front Row" thing.

You simply place the
You simply place the Video_TS folder in a folder of the name of your movie i.e Terminator and then place that in the Movies folder. Launch Front Row 2 and navigate to terminator, select it and play, Front Row 2 plays the Video_TS file.
To do it over a network I use the same process but put a Symbolic link (
http://seiryu.home.comcast.net/~seiryu/symboliclinker.html) of the folders names in the Movies folder and acess them files over the network... all streams perfectly.
Thanks this is good to hear
Thanks this is good to hear that it is possible but to what movies folder are you referring and where?

You can set up the keyboard shortcut in System preferences to something like F7 or use the current ones which are Apple Key + Escape (I believe)

Still waiting for my Leopard-DVD to arrive, I haven't tested for Leopard-compatibility, but I'd guess that Perian would allow you to watch your AVIs, even in Front Row…

Someone told me that Front Row will not work if you connect your Mac to a TV? Is it true?
I hear that Leopard FrontRow
I hear that Leopard FrontRow will handle video_ts directly without having to use DVD Assist. Does this include -iso files? I'm a bit new on this, but I do have some iso images on my Vista desktop. In Tiger I used DVD assist to play them on my Mac mini. Do I still need DVD assist to do this?

Perian and Frontrow displaying shares
I have leopard, frontrow and perian 1.1 but can not figure out how I access the mkv files I have stored on a network drive. People have indicated frontrow displays "shares" but I can not see anything in the movies folder of frontrow. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
VideoDrive
If you have a whole video collection in an incompatible format (like MKV or AVI), you can now use VideoDrive to put all your videos in iTunes and Front Row.
It automatically downloads metadata (descriptions) and cover art, classifies videos as movies or TV Shows and adds season and episode numbering! It's available now at the VideoDrive website
