Absinthe A5 arrives: Untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 finally a reality

UPDATE: If you’re getting the “Error establishing a database connection” when launching the jailbreak tool, hacker PlanetBeing tweeted a simple workaround solution: Go to Settings and enable VPN under Network.

According to hacker p0sixninja, the jailbreak community just posted an untethered jailbreak solution for A5-driven devices running iOS 5.0 or iOS 5.0.1. The software is a long expected follow-up to an untethered iOS 5.0.1 exploit for non-A5 devices, released last December. According to a blog post, the new jailbreak is called “Absinthe A5,” and it was not exactly a walk in the park.

The updated greenpois0n tool is now available for download here. It’s Mac-only, but Windows version is “coming soon”. The application lets iPad 2 and iPhone 4S owners finally jailbreak their device without the need to tether it to a computer upon each reboot. This jailbreak can be used with both iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 build 9A334 and iOS 5.0.1 (builds 9A405 and 9A406) and iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 build 9A405.

Hackers demo untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak as release looms

Hacker Pod2g posted an interesting video this morning on his blog that shows a working untethered jailbreak performed on the iPhone 4S with iOS 5.0.1. It runs without a hiccup and the device easily reboots after the jailbreak without needing to tether it to a computer. The video is credited to Dustin Howett, a Chronic Dev Team member.

According to Pod2g, with “only a few to wait now,” an untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is around the corner. The video demonstration follows a flurry of Twitter activity last week that indicated that jailbreak community is now close to releasing a jailbreak solution for A5-driven iOS devices running iOS 5.0.1. Note that an untethered jailbreak for non-A5 devices running iOS 5.0.1 has been available since the end of 2011.

Jailbreakme.com site to open for business soon?

Last week’s leak revealed that @Comex had another iOS PDF exploit in the works.  Looking at Jailbreakme.com this evening, it appears that a new version of the famous iOS untethered jailbreak is about to be unleashed.  The ‘coming soon’ yellow sticky looks like the sticky Apple puts on its store right before new products hit the virtual shelves.  Read more

iPad 2 Jailbreak leaked by beta tester

@comex, a member of the Dev-team has been working hard on an iPad2 jailbreak since the device was released.  The jailbreak will use another PDF exploit via jailbreakme.com and support iOS 4.2.1-4.3.3.  Last night, however, one of the jailbreak beta testers leaked the exploit online.  This version of the JailbreakMe 3.0 exploit has not been confirmed by the Dev-Team or @Comex himself.  Many users have reported that this exploit only works with WIFI-only iPads and issues with Safari crashing.  (Sounds wonderful!)

We must reiterate that this Jailbreak has not been confirmed by the Dev-Team to be working or even safe.  Several iPad2 Jailbreak related malware have been distributed recently, so proceed with caution if you must attempt to use this leak. Hopefully we will hear from the Dev-Team or even receive an official iPad2 Jailbreak soon. Screenshot below:

Jailbreakering Devs: sn0wbreeze 2.8b1 and tethered redsn0w available

If you are an iOS 5 developer (or play one on TV), you may be interested in jailbreaking your iOS 5 devices (iPad 2s need not apply) so that you can build Notification widgets or something.  The good news is that you have two different options.  One is from @iH8sn0w who has released the snowbreeze 2.8b1 jailbreak for tethered iOS devices.

That follows the Dev team, which released redsn0w 0.9.8b1 for Mac (Windows) on Friday.

Both jailbreaks are “extremely beta”, but can be used to exploit notifications and other iOS 5 technologies. Read more
