Walmart set to permanently discount iPhone 5s to $99, 5c to $29 tomorrow

Engadget reports that Walmart is preparing to make significant cuts to its iPhone pricing tomorrow. According to a Walmart spokesman, the iPhone 5s will be available on a two-year contract for only $99, down from the previous price of $149. The iPhone 5c, on the other hand, will be only $29 on a contract, down $20 from the previous $49.

Both of these prices apply to the 16 GB models, but there isn’t any word on the prices for the 32 GB or 64 GB devices, though they will also see cuts. The new prices will reportedly only be available in-store, not online. It doesn’t look like any other Apple products will see similar changes, though the larger iPod touch models did just see a price drop earlier today.

“the larger iPod touch models did just see a price drop earlier today.”

Actually, Mike, all iPod touch models saw price drops earlier today.

Actually he’s correct, the latest generation iPod touch is in fact the largest iPod touch model released to date. Having say “All iPod touch models have been discounted” would been incorrect as all iPod touch 4th gen and older are no longer in production.

This will be interesting and I think it will cause demands of other retailers. Opinions?

At this price level I don’t think there’s a reason for anyone not to own an iPhone. iPhone pricing should be as good as any Android smartphone so consumers shouldn’t have any excuses about the iPhone being too expensive to own. The 5s is really cheap and Walmart must be trying to clear inventory before iPhone 6 hits the streets. There should be some massive upgrading come this fall. Apple shareholders appear to have a lot to look forward to.

There are plenty of reasons for people to not own an iPhone and it’s not all about price. I bought my Samsung device because it offered advanced features that iPhone has yet to offer. Plus the screen is larger and better, expandable storage and removable battery.
In fact, when you count all of the people who use smartphones it’s not the majority who use iPhones.

Stockholders rejoice after layoffs are announced. Of course, not all RIF are annouced.

Let’s not forget that price is for a phone that’s nearly a year old.
While it’s still a phone, many people want the newest – even if they can’t afford it.

I don’t see this price moving people from Samsung to Apple.

Let’s not forget that the endless rumors of upcoming products may provide click bait for websites like these, but they also get people excited about new products. The latter could cause people to postpone buying a discounted year-old phone.
